Upgrading (well new build) my (30 yr old) sons PC for him to take home after Xmas

He spent £1000 on his last build in 2015 so it’s lasted him well, only had to replace power supply in that time, but now he wants something faster. His current build is i7 4970k and a 4GB GTX970

He’s initial figure is around £1500 but does’t mind go to £1700, he wants it lo last just as long.

He uses it mainly for gaming, but he doesn’t care about 4k or higher, is happy with his 24 inch monitor and while he might replace it (not out of this budget), he’s not looking to get much bigger, might go up to 27 inch.

I used to be fairly up to date with all this but a bit out of the loop.

I’ve decided to go the AMD route and have just ordered the

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core 5.00GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail. For £329.99 From OC as it’s in their Black Friday sale and gets good reviews.

I’m thinking that he’s best running his games from M.2 rather than Sata?

Graphics cards are my biggest hurdle, he wants something decent but if he’s not getting a monitor with a res over 2560 x 1440, he doesn’t need to spend a silly amount.

So, I’ve had a look, I’m thinking along these lines (still not sure of the graphics).

Motherboard https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...ocket-am5-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mb-6k0-as.html £149.99

RAM https://www.overclockers.co.uk/king...r5-pc5-48000c36-6000mhz-dual-c-my-29r-ks.html £139.99

m.2 for boot drive and other programs. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cruc...i-e-3.0-nvme-solid-state-drive-hd-078-cr.html £89.99

m.2 for games. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cruc...nand-nvme-solid-state-drive-wi-hd-07n-cr.html £119.99

sata Ssd: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sams...er-3d-v-nand-solid-state-drive-hd-245-sa.html. £196.99

Power Supply: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ther...e-pcie-5-fully-modular-80-plus-ca-1br-tt.html £179.99

that total inc CPU comes to £1206.93

then a cpu cooler, case and graphics card, might go water cooled for cooler, might not, he wants a quiet pc lol.

Any thoughts please?

Thanks

Plenty of room left over for a good case of choice, I'd also recommend grabbing a Thermalright Peerless Assassin HSF for £25-30 or so to go with.

There's obviously still room in the budget for the 7800X3D if you want to spring for it, but the 7600 is still very capable.

Even at 1440P new games are becoming very demanding, given he's kept the same GPU in his current rig for 8 + years I would spring for the most powerful GPU that you can budget for with that use case.

If it were my money, I'd take a 7600 + 7900XTX or 4080 over a 7800X3D and a lesser card.

For the most part it doesn't matter, it would be fine for a steam library of old games, but for newer games they are starting to stream from the drive now, so I think it is sensible to go M.2, especially since M.2 drives are plentiful and cheap.

Nice PSU, but overkill unless he wants something like a 4090 or 7900 XTX.

I wouldn't bother with fast/fancy RAM for the X3D based on these benchmarks.
I'm not a fan of the P3 (endurance and QLC), but if I were to buy one, I'd rather have the more durable P5 as the boot drive and the P3 as the game drive.

Cooler the same as mentioned above.

If aiming for a build around the 1400-1500 range you'd have ample money left over for a nice 1440p screen. It would be a crying shame to run a rig like either of the above on an old 1080p monitor.

Thanks, that looks very good, will almost certainly go for what you suggest

On my pc I have the Arctic P12 fans that are very quiet. Would it be worth getting 3 of them for the case?

can’t find “Thermalright Peerless Assassin HSF” anywhere, can find then ending “SE” instead of “HSF?

many thanks

HSF is an acronym for Heatsink + Fan, the SE edition will be absolutely fine.

I would go with the fans the case comes with at first and maybe test them out, if noise is a big factor for you feel free to switch them. I doubt you'll run into problems with those suggested if I'm honest, pre-empting issues could just end up wasting time/money.

Many thanks, should have guessed HSF doh

I wouldn't for gaming. If I did anything, I'd upgrade the 1TB SN570 to another 2TB SN580 (the P5P was intended as the boot drive).
Sorry for not totally understanding, when you say the P5P as the boot, are you referring to the sn850x?

Any difference in thermal paste, or is something like Arctic silver as good as any other?

many thanks
