Hi all,

So after a 2 year absence from the desktop market i'm planning to completely replace my old tower and its internals over the next few months. This is it currently:

Thermaltake Kandalf case
P4 641
ECS RS400-A
Radeon 9600-SE
Hiper Type R Mk2 680W (this is the revised, non exploding, non-modular one)

And this is what I'm planning to replace it:

Asus HD5850
i5 750
Titan Fenrir (or maybe H50)
4GB 1.5V DDR3-1600 (2x2)
MSI P55-GD65 or GA-P55M-UD4

Firstly, the psu has a max of ~400W on the four +12V rails, would this be sufficient to power the system? And maybe an overclock to 3.6GHz on the i5 and 850/1200 on the 5850?

Secondly, because I'm a student and poor and stuff, this will have to happen over a few months, I'm thinking GPU first, then the CPU etc. What do you guys think the performance will be like (or rather, will i be able to play Crysis on 1080p?) with a HD5850 and P4 single core 641 processor?

And lastly, I'm thinking of also changing the case to something that is on the light side of 20 kilos, but can't decide between the Antec 300 and the CM-690 and would like your opinions.

Sorry it's a bit long :)

You can't use the computer until you have all the components, so just wait until you can buy everything in one go. In the time it takes to get everything prices will fluctuate and new hardware will be released.

Come back in as many months as it takes with the whole amount ready.

I'm sorry but that half answers my second question and nothing on the other two, and your reply reads quite rude.

Two days and one reply?

Im sure he dint mean it to be rude, just sometimes when people are to the point it comes across that way
Id have to agree, imo youd be best waiting for a few months, save your money up and buy it all in one go, chances are you could save yourself around £50 (purely speculation) by leaving buying some of the components til later
Re the case, the 300 is a great little case but think the 690 is slightly bigger and more spacious to work with.
Id also storngly recomend a new PSU, hiper arent the best make and have a very poor reliability record, you dont want to hook up your new gfx card and/or system and have the psu blow and take other things with it.
For what you want I recomend waiting til youve got at least 700 in the bank and building your system in one go then

Thanks for the quick replies guys,
Yeah I guess it would work out better. To be honest I'm a bit skeptical of the AMD build not because i'm a fanboi of anyone (except performance) but because in my memory it has always seemed that their processors are only worth it if you're prepared to work for the results, and rely on luck with getting an overclockable one; and I know people say "I've unlocked x P2 X3's" and "I'm on a bazillion GHz using the ref cooler!" but no one ever seems to point out that there are also people who can't even push their P2 965 C3 to 3.6GHz. For this reason I chose the i5 which won't need that an extreme of an overclock to bottleneck any current gpu... But then again, neither will the 955. I'm still very undecided on the platform.

This is the current spec:
You could save 20 pound on the case by getting Antec 300. I have it and it really does have excellent airflow.

I get 30c idle CPU at most with stock fan, and 50c load at most (even after overclocked (slightly))

srsly?! what are you running inside it?

Nothing amazing.

I am running an AMD Phenom 810 @3.00GHz, Sapphire 4850, ASUS M4A785D-M Pro Motherboard, 2x Kingston 4GB RAm (some limited edition thing, I really have no idea), 2 Western Digital HDs, some cheap CD drive :D, OCZ ModXstream Modular PSU.

There is great intake from the front and then it gets pushed out through the back by the two fans that are supplied by Antec.

I personally love this case, others may disagree.

Well I definitely agree, the exterior and noise reduction are simply amazing, but the size is a bit of a double edged sword, will there be adequate airflow to support my spec?

The Antec 300 isn't massive, but should fit everything you spec'd without having to mod a HDD bay or anything lol! and the airflow should be decent too.

Holy Thread Revival Batman!

How does this look?

I was pretty confused too :) Mind, if you followed my idea, you'd have upto £100 for acase, even more choice!!! :p

Which then i'd recommend the Fractal R2 :)
