New build advice

depends what make/model 500W PSU it is. if its a no brand or unknown brand then no it wont be enough, if its a good brand then it will almost certainly be enough

Measured power consumption Radeon HD 6950

System in IDLE = 174W
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 312W
Difference (GPU load) = 138W
Add average IDLE wattage ~ 20W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 158 Watts

just found that so to be safe a would get a 600-650 psu

i would definitly get a new one then. even if it was powerful enough to power the card i wouldnt trust a no brand PSU with a £200 graphics card.

something like this will do nicely:

or, if you want the option of powering two of those in crossfire later on then go for something like this:

Would that power supply work though? the original HP came with a 300w supply and the graphics card was a ATI Radeon HD4350, that consumed 30w. I'm running 500w, it should be ok right? at least until I can sell the 500w supply in favour of a 650w or higher?

problem with cheaper power supply as far as i,m aware is they dont have a lot of fail safes as well as usually well below the power they claim
so if they do go pop they tend to take other expensive bits with them..

yes i guess more so if its new unit but would be tempted to make it a priority.

but a decent 600/650 would be ideal unless you ever plan to crossfire if you can on that motherboard..

Motherboard is out of a HP so I doubt it, I might spring for a 750-800 just for future thoughts.

Just bought this

Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 850W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CMPSU-850TXV2UK) Should hold up pretty well for future updates

that will cope with any single or two card setup you throw at it, even two GTX 580's.

might even cope with three of the 6950's in crossfire (tri-fire)

Yeah thats what I was thinking, future proofing, then I just need a new motherboard and ram to go with it at some point in the future, the stock board that came with the hp has a Quad Core processor, so with the new graphics card Crysis might actually run on high settings lol
