New build advice

Im about to replace my broken 5th gen Intel system, that had an unexpected mug of coffee. Ive managed to recover a few of the components like the GTX908ti, a 750w gold rated ATX Power supply (SuperFlower I think) and 8 sticks of 4GB DDR4 2133Mhz Corsair LPX memory and the several SSD’s I had installed. All have been checked and seem to be still working still, although have a nice smell of coffee…

i was planning on building a ITX system using a AMD cpu and gpu, I quite like the idea of a small footprint system. Planned use is mainly for MSFS2020 plus some non AAA games like assassin's creed, elite dangerous etc. Anyway was looking at something like a Ryzen 9 5900X and a RTX 6800 / 6800XT.

I could reduce some of the cost by rescuing the PSU but then I'm going down the route of a ATX build. Also i think MSFS may benefit from 32GB ram, although i may have got this wrong.

So the reason for this post is that now there is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, so should i go for this processor instead. The 100mb of L3 cache seems to have some big benefits in MSFS but seems to be less beneficial in normal productivity use. Watched a good video by PremiumBuilds on youtube and his testing seems to suggest a big benefit in having more L3 cache for MSFS2020.

So advice I’m looking for is if starting from scratch should i go with the new CPU or go with the Ryzen 9 5900X. I know AM5 is around the corner but not sure i would want to jump on the new architecture straight away. I know if i go down the AM4 route swapping to AM5 is a new motherboard and cpu etc.

Also on the question of motherboards what chipset is advisable for either of these cpu’s? Im not into overclocking so dont new anything that gives me the availability to overclock.

i dont know much about AMD hardware so some advice would be much appreciated.

I pretty confident I am safe with the PSU as it was under a shroud and there was no signs of coffee leakage visible. Its a white PSU so would have shown up pretty easily and the vent on the PSU was facind downwards. The RAM sticks were a bit more exposed as was the GTX980ti, both these had staining on them, it did clean down with alcohol but these would be the bits I would be wary of. All the parts were tested by a local computer store over a 5 day period and they seem to be confident from their tests that these components are OK, but obviosly they cant guarantee failure in the future.

To be honest Im not worried if I have to replace all the components. I know the GPU is a bit lacking for MSFS2020 anyway. I suppose what Im trying to get advice on is if Im going to build an entirely new system would the 5800X3D be a good bet or would 5900X be a safer bet. The PC is mainly gaming, the only other uses are Web browsing, Word/Excel/Email so not really much productivity work. Im dont stream or do social media or do any video encoding. Even gaming is limited to MSFS2020, Elite Dangerous and I have a buch of Assasins Creed games.
