New build - am I doing anything silly?

Hey,

Been out of the hardware loop for a while and wondering if my nights worth of research has served me well or if I'm doing something silly.

It started with only "upgrading" the HTPC to a silent i3-based system... but then I decided I wanted a new PC for my own use & give the iMac to the wifey for christmas... hehe

I am looking for a relatively future proof build... I know that's a bit of an oxymoron, but I'll get over it.

I notice with the latest 9XX cards, Nvidia has done the same they did with the 6XX series in releasing the mid-range before releasing the true top-end cards (see: GTX680 -> GTX780ti)... so I have decided I don't want to buy into the GTX9XX, considering my last high end card was a GTX690 and I'm going to wait on the next high-end single card release to buy into that.

So given limited funds and no GFX cards available at the moment that I actually want... I have decided to start building the base system and add the extra bits at a later date... I have 2 or 3 PCI-E based graphics cards not doing much in the basement that will tide me over for workstation-based-usage for now.

I'm wanting a build that is good for photo editing, a little bit of video encoding and at a later date games, while being reasonable value for money - rather than spending silly money on the extreme of xeon processors of 8+ cores.

In my new house, noise level is a significant consideration for me. In my previous place, I thought the Late-2012 iMac was silent, or near enough... in this place the sound of the hard drive spinning is noticeable... annoyingly so... louder than the fans. So the quieter the better.

So I've gone and ordered:

Intel 5820k
Kingston Predator 2666Mhz 4x 4GB
Corsair H110 (seems to have the best noise/performance ratio of all AIO water coolers)
BeQuiet Silent Base 800
Asus X99 Deluxe (I was considering the MSI SLI - but reviews seem to recommend the Asus over the MSI)

I have a PSU & GPU that will do for now, but those will be upgraded later.

For a price/silence/performance balance, could I have done better in this order? (I still have 7-10 days to change it without affecting the etailer - some parts are on back-order). I imagine I might want to replace the fans in the case, but I have read they are a good starting point.

Thanks :)

FYI: Got 2x 480GB Intel 730 drives in OCUK's special black friday offer that will be in Raid-0 for this build (whatever the perceived benefit - I feel like it).

The HTPC will now be i3 4360 + Streacom FC8S + Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI which should do the trick for good quality playback :D

Buying in France / Switzerland... X99-Deluxe + 5820k may have cost me only about 30GBP more than the Asus X99S + 5820k deal :) Plus local, rather than having the parents bring it over at Christmas - otherwise I would have bought through OCUK if still in the UK :)

I bought the Deluxe based on reviews & what was available from local e-tailers... there isn't as much choice as OCUK... First I heard of the X99S was actually your link!

Although the X99S does not appear to have the on-board ac based wireless like the deluxe does and that may prove itself useful... albeit I have on the same day ordered a couple of 20m cat 6e shielded cables... so will likely have the upstairs wired instead... the iMac still manages a solid 300-400mbit to the router which is downstairs.

It's the latency that bothers me on wireless, although it doesn't bother the wife! :)

Other than wifi... I don't see any difference in Deluxe VS S

Found the X99S after all for about 70 quid less... so have switched the motherboards :)

Wireless and a few extra USB ports I won't use aren't worth the extra.
