Hi guys.

time to build a new PC

so, whats best bang for buck for me, ATI or intel?

the PC will mainly be used as a HTPC but i also want to be able to play games on it (GTA V, fifa & witcher). i want it to be near silent when viewing media.

i guess the options are Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz or an unlocked piledriver (or even APU). and which would be a good overclocking mobo for these chips? what is a nice quiet HSF solution?

from what i can see intel gives me a better response time for normal usage but the additional cores will help with gaming? i dont really do much video editing or transcoding.

is 16gb ram really worth it for what i want to do?

i am planning on getting an nvidia 970 as they seem to run quiet and be best value for money compared to ATI.

ah you buggers. stop taking up all the thread. yes, i meant AMD. hadnt had my coffee when i created this!

ok, so i5k seems to be the way to go. whats a good mobo for it?

also looking for a nice quiet case. doesnt need to be too small. midi to full tower would be good, i have been looking at the be quiet! ones, they also include a free HSF.

For the first point, to me this is a bit of a fallacy. We're never always a month or two off another socket/better performing CPU. Broadwell is probably like launching this month, but I have no idea if there's a replacement for the 4690K/4790K (Or any i5/i7 k), it'll be on the same socket as Devils Canyon. As for Skylake, Intel are attempting to launch this year. To be honest, for confusion of what's happening, maybe DC would be best.

And secondly, not really. They'll probably just replace the CPU's at their current price points.

from what i just read broadwell wont do much other than lower power usage. i guess this might mean a modest heat improvement too. doesnt sound like its worth waiting for from what i just read. Skylake may be but how many months away is that?

ok, so what would be a good ocing mobo? its so easy to get lost in the features on motherboards. a quiet one would be nice. but i guess we dont have noisy NB fans any more? im a bit out of touch now! ever since i became a dad my toy budget is pretty lousy lol

ok, so what chipset on the 1150? there are bloody loads to choose from. please help me select a better option than the 2 bloody nforce boards i had that were crap!

edit: maybe SLI option would be good, need a PCI-e x1 slot too for my TV tuner card.

Not disagreeing, just responding directly to "whats best bang for buck for me, ATI or intel?". I gave performance figures for two of the three games listed in the OP and the price difference, now it's up to him/her.

My personal take is that £90 to go from 60ish to 70ish FPS isn't great value, especially with a 60 Hz monitor, but if it came down to it I'd still probably get an i5.

Just noticed the bit about the 970 - OP you can get a 290X for less money which will be faster. I would get 8 G RAM.

are AMD gfx cards still a bit troublesome? i had an AMD before i got my 580 and had nothing but trouble with it. FPS from 20-200 in games yet the nvidia was 50-150. also i hear the 970s are a lot quieter?

Not heard of any problems with the 290X. Min and avg FPS are higher for a stock 290X than a 970 in Crysis. Have a poke around:

http://techreport.com/review/27067/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-and-970-graphics-cards-reviewed/8 (actually min is about the same in this one)

in that 2nd link the 290x gets hammered on a lot of things by the 970. in fairness i have never had issues with nvidia since the very first geforces came out, my experiences with ATI/AMD GPUS has always been terrible.

anyway, thanks for the input.

Wait for Skylake. You have waited all this time so another 2-3 months won't make any difference. I just don't see the point in buying into a socket that's about to be replaced. Skylake brings with it a new chipset on a new socket and DDR4. As for the prices they are already stupid. The normal price now for a i5 4690k is £200 and that's just obscene.

its only recently my PC has started playing up. its used daily for a few hours so i want something ASAP really. plus i want to have a go on GTA V :)
