Just about to start a new build to go in my living room. I have an Onkyo AVR + 7.1 speaker set-up that I want to connect to the PC for movies/Music etc.

I've got most of my components, going to buy mobo this week (Z77X-UD3H or Asus P8Z77-V, possibly UD5H for the improved sound).

Just wanted some advice on whether a soundcard would be worth while, given the PC will be connected to the AVR?

Cheers

What you can do is to use HDMI from the graphics card. They have their own sound controller, so no need for a sound card, or using SPDIF from motherboard.

The card can pass on the HD audio formats found on Blu-ray, so if you wanted to use your PC to play those, then you can get access to the HD audio formats with no problem.

If you are going to buy a UD5H anyway, then fair enough, but don't buy one for any improved sound over the other boards, as it won't be used. Far better to use HDMI.

HDMI will do higher bitrate audio than you can get over SPDIF, this is the best option. You can skimp on the mobo as you won't be using it's soundcard.

Right ok thats good, and that shouldn't inhibit the avr? If thats the case i'll opt for the ud3h or asus, thanks a lot.
