I built my first build a i7 Haswell build with my friend on Tuesday and since then I've had 4 blue screens. I had 2 but then updated the GPU drivers and i thought that had fixed it but no, I've had another 2, one just now.

He said he thinks it might be the ram. How do I find the problem?

my spec
i7 4770k
16gb of 1600mhz ram
gtx770
Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
Corsair Carbide 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case - Black (CC-9011030-WW)

Thanks for the help

Is anything overclocked?

Is this a fresh install of the OS and programs etc

Try updating the board BIOS if its older.

Is the RAM setup correctly (either manually or via XMP)?

Nothing overclocked, Yep it's all fresh, i've not checked the board BIOS actually. We just put the RAM in the slots :P Quad channel. I'll take a look at the BIOS now

Will do, not had time yet today. It runs fine for hours even days so might be awhile until I know for sure of a fix. What if it works fine in dual channel? is it just a faulty stick or motherboard?

Ok so i've not had a blue screen for a few days now. Taking two of the sticks of RAM out seems to have worked so far. Does that mean I have dodgy ram?

I tried 4 sticks of ram in my current board once. All identical. BSOD on boot each time.

I then tried each stick in dual channel and tested each one. There wasn't any issue.

I then tested the other 2 slots on my board, again no issue.

I guessed that it was that my mobo didn't like all slots in use. Maybe you can try the same procedure?

Which errors are you getting? as my build is Haswell, and has the same mobo which is getting x0124 errors with nothing overclocked. Been good so far though with updated bios & XMP profile on RAM.

I can't remember the error, it will be fine for hours and will only error once a day. I've been on it all day most days trying to meet deadlines. Luckily i've not lost any work yet. I need more that this 8gb of ram i think since i'm using AE and C4D loads atm

Honest answer is I have no idea, I'm just trying to help you diagnose the problem. Once you know what is causing it then some googlefoo or someone else will be able to help you fix it. Untill then theres not much people can do to help because they don't know whats wrong ;)

So basically first :

Test each stick of ram individually ( start with 2, if that is working switch them out 1 at a time) - once you have confirmed that all the ram is working then :

Test all the ram slots on the mobo. Take two working sticks in one channel, then remove and put them in the other channel. Once you have confirmed all the slots are working then :

All sticks in and head to bios and see what your Mobo is able to detect and use ( I've seen a mobo detecting in all slots but only having 2 of them available at once with similar errors as you are recieving). Too be honest you could start with this procedure first.

If you manage to pass all these tests then maybe take a look at some other components, eg remove gfx card and run with onboard for a bit to see if that works ( with only 2 working sticks of ram in at the time! ). you mentioned GPU drivers impacting the issue so maybe this?

Basically try to isolate and reproduce the incidents, slowly removing components untill it stops. Then replace that component and try it with different configurations to confirm it is that component.

It's a time consuming process but its the only way i know how to identify a hardware issue.

Thanks! I'm pretty certain that it's to do with the RAM one way or another. Since I've had these two sticks in only I've had no problems. Will try the other duel channel and then swap the sticks out one by one. It's gonna take a few days though since I was only getting one screen a day in the first place.

Will report back later (Y) cheers! :p
