New Build - Boot Problems!

Hi everybody,

im hoping someone can help me out please, bought a whole load of new gear yesterday:

i7-3770K
MSI Z77A GD55 MB (1155)
Corsair TX 650 W v2 PSU
Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4gb DDR3
Corsair Force Series 3 120gb SSD
Corsair Hydro H80 CPU coller
GTX 560 ti GPU
also got a additional 1TB HDD DVD RW and Cooler Master CM690 case

spent most of last night fitting it all up, everything is fitting ok and looks to be plugged in correctly, CPU went in fine, cooler went ontop ok. all fans connected, front case switches all connected, 24pin PSU plugged into MB etc etc.

the problem i am having is the PC will no boot, when you hit the poweron button the power button on the MB turns on, the fans start to spin, then stop, 2 or 3 seconds later the power light on the MB has gone out. cant get anything to display on the screen:( even the HDD dont seem to be spinning up or anything.

so i removed the GPU, the SSD and left it with 1 stick of RAM and the standard HDD and tried again. just incase any of these were causing issues. but the problem persists, turns on, then just goes straight off again.

it was getting fairly late last night so i decided to sleep on it then just double check everything tonight when i get home. i.e take it all out and put it all in again making sure i havnt missed anything connectors wise.

my main question is, is there anything obvious i might be missing. do i need anything other than the 24pin cable from the PSU to be connected the the Mainboard. is there any thing i can check to narrow down the potential problem a bit, could this be a faulty MB or PSU? im not sure the fans or anything would start to spin if the PSU is faulty so i assume that is ok?

any help/ advice is much appreciated, hopefully just taking it apart and putting it back together will sort it out. but if anyone can think of anything that will help?

99.9% chance you need a BIOS update needed, you will have to use a low spec cpu that is supported by the board when it was made, that the only problem with new tec you board could have been held in stock for months so will have an old none compatible BIOS

but just so your 100% try removing some of the ram and the gfx, to see if it will boot but i would say your going to need a bios update

You mention the 24 pin power connection for the MoBo but most MoBo's also need a 2nd power connection somewhere else on the board. Make sure that this is connected up before you start checking more complicated things!
 
Hi Dave,

thanks for the super swift reply, i see, i only have a i5 750 which i dont think will fit that board. 1156?!?

so basically boot it with a older CPU, update the BIOS as required, will hopefully then support the new ivybridge? ill see if shorting the CMOS or anything will bring it too life, if not ill prob just RMA maybe, dont know enough about flashing BIOS from USB sticks to try it i dont think :S

awesome thank you, ill defo investigate if there are any missing connectors for the PSU to the Mobo. think im going to get my other rig out and compare connectors etc also. im really hoping it is something nice and easy ive missed and can just plug something in and go.

No problem. The 2nd connection is normally placed at the top edge of the board

as per dave's comments, just checked the mobo layout in the manual and its located at the top of the mobo close to the rear panel (where keyboard, usb slots are).

had a quick search around the net and noticed theres a few few threads around about this and most of them point towards a bios update :(.

Hi all,

that's very much for your replies, this is great, got a few options to try now, im really hoping ive just not plugged on of the PSU connectors to the board, if it is all connected and needs a BIOS update ill try to do this via USB, but i think without atleast booting into the UEFI BIOS i wont be bale to update anything. i think the option Dave0w mentioned about sending back to overclockers for the BIOS flash may be the way to do it, or gettign a cheap CPU which it will boot with. really hoping the MB isnt DOA. this happens though i suppose. not a lot that can be done, just annoying cause its difficult to tell what the problem actually is!

ill check for that 2nd PSU connector and report back, fingers crossed :D :D
 
just as an aside, make sure you leave your sata hard drive DISCONNECTED when you go to install onto you SSD drive.

daft question but not sure if the H80 cooler needs a power connector on it, if it does i take its ok ?

Well... sort of, ive tried re seating everything and running it on minimal parts, i.e 1 HDD, 1 x stick of RAM, no GPU, just to see if it boots at all, but still in same situation. plan is to try and different PSU and RAM tnite, then maybe see if i can try a alternative MB and see if i can atleast confirm that there is no issues with the CPU and PSU etc.

any other ideas for elimination?
 
if you get chance see what happens if you try to boot without the processor in place.

another thing to try is to TOTALLY disconnect the psu from the system then try the paper clip test to see if it powers up ok.

plenty of guides on the net so google will help you.

awesome. i think ill have to remove the CPU cooler to check for the other PSU connector ports on the MB anyway so can defo get the chip out and try a dry boot.

great mate, ill try that paperclip method at the same time and fingers crossed. i think if all off the above advise fails. just guna be a RMA or ill buy a Asus! lol

you might not need to, if you open the case up, it should be pretty close to the back panel, where the rear fan is likely to be.

the diagram in the manual shows it to be fairly close to the top edge of the mobo, might need a torch to have a good look :).

Brilliant thanks mate, if i can do it without moving the radiator and both fans that would be ideal... cumbersome things that they are. :D
