Ok, so Im going to build a new rig although dont have a stash of cash saved and dont want to buy on a credit card so am going to be buying something each month to contribute to my new build.

The Mobo and CPU will be the last thing purchased with the VGA card before that. Who knows, maybe AM3 would be available or around the corner by the time I get to buying my CPU ;)

Allready have Monitor, Hard Drives, Optical Drives so need the following:

Case
PSU
RAM
Cooling for CPU/Case
Sound Card
VGA Card
Mobo
CPU

Probably take about 6 months to buy everything so am am looking to buy as futureproof as possible which I know isnt entirely possible but I think I should be OK with my choices.

Have picked these items to start me off:

There maybe better cases around but I like that one, mainly as it looks soo nice on the inside with the seperate HDD mounts etc. My thinking is that unless there is a major formfactor change and BTX not going anywhere, the case should last me a few years.

Have chose the PSU as I want to buy a deecent power supply as only used ready fitted case PSU's before and it has a lifetime warranty which is nice and doesnt seem that costly knowing you have that.

Am unsure about the RAM as my concern is DDR3 coming down in price but with DDR2 being soo cheap at present, it seems silly not to buy now - Opinions please? DDR2 will still be compatible, even for the next major socket change, AM3 so seems a safe bet to get DDR2.

Am undecided as to what other components but will look after getting the abive 3 first.

Looking forward to your thoughts and opinions.

Roll on 6 months time :)

The best things come to those who wait.

Why not just save up and buy it all at the same time? Theres no advantage to buying in stages, new stuff comes out and generally prices only go down, just save up for 6 months ad buy the whole lot then

I have to agree with the other two. By the time you get to finishing your rig you'll be left with parts that are outdated already. If you save up you'll have a better rig in the long term.

I know what it's like to only have small bits of money at a time. I went the route of getting the Asrock Dual-Vsta board which let me upgrade over time but actually use the parts as I went. It had AGP, PCI-E, DDR and DDR2 so I could upgrade from my old AGP, DDR over time.

Would rather build a rig with premium "outdated" components than run of the mill cheaper components.

Even then, as long as the CPU/MOBO/VGA are purchased within a 2 month period, im not bothered. Its not as if the Case is going to become "Unusable" in 6 months? Outdated with a better model, Maybe, But I would still have a very good case.

set up a regular saver with your bank were you can't access it for 12 months then after 6 months close it.

hahah soryy thats my job from my gap year coming thourgh! lol

buying part by part in pc parts is stupidity

Surely just because it doesn't meet with your definition of a 'good idea' doesn't make it stupidity? Yes CPU prices will fall slightly (they're hardly going to halve over night lets be honest it's intel and they rarely slash prices, it's usually a little more gradual, new cores will be released and the benchmark of what's bleeding edge will move another step painfully forward. DDR2 prices appear to be going up slightly (£3 on the Geil stuff advertised in the banner on the forum compared to what you get if you click the image) but in general over a period of 2-3 months most other things will remain pretty constant. The only extra cost is in the P&P charges, but as for stupidity ... don't be stupid :D
