Hi all. I'm new to building PC's but have been reading through the forum for the last few weeks trying to get up to speed with what I need for my new build. I'd appreciate any comments on the spec I've come up with to make sure everything will work/fit together OK. I've already got a keyboard, mouse and speakers. I've also already picked up 16GB DDR4 HyperX 2400MHz RAM.

The machine will be my daily driver, used for MS Office, Internet, listening to music, Photoshop and Lightroom, basic video editing in Sony Movie Studio and I also fancy getting into PC gaming (CS:GO, FPS type games). The spec I have come up with is as follows:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,458.71
(includes shipping: £20.82)

Few questions:

- Will all the above work ok together and is this a good build for the money?

- The MSI GTX 970 seems to get excellent reviews. Are there any other manufacturers I should be considering? From what I've read the MSI runs cool and quiet. Will the GPU be sufficient to drive the 1440p monitor in games. I'm not too bothered about running every game on max settings, but I want a reasonable game playing experience. Gaming won't be the primary use but it would be good to have the option.

- Is the Matterhorn cooler generally regarded as better than the Hyper 212 EVO and will it fit in the 300r and be ok on the 1151 socket?

- I'm still undecided between an i7-6700k and the i5-6600k - is the i7 likely to make a huge difference in Lightroom/Photoshop/Movie Studio?

Any other suggestions on swapping components appreciated - thanks.

Hi and welcome,

A quick glance suggest sit all compatible etc. But you can afford to go X99 instead and with that you gain 6core+ CPUs.

Example,

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,437.72
(includes shipping: £15.90)

• No dvd drive as do you really need one? the case has no option for internal DVD drives so if you did want one it would have to be USB.
• AOC monitor has the same panel as the Dell I think.
• Plenty of other GTX970s, the Gigabyte G1 Windforce/EVGA/ASUS strix/MSI gaming are all good.

Stulid, many thanks for the suggestions. I'll do some research into that monitor, looks good. I'd not considered X99. I've already bought the RAM (2 x 8GB) - does X99 need 4 sticks? Is there a particular reason you suggested the Gigabyte 970 over the MSI?

Hi, X99 does indeed use quad channel RAM for best performance, so add the Kingston onto your already bought Kingston ram.

The Gigabyte G1 Windforce was cheaper and still includes an excellent cooler, I have adjusted the basket to include the xtreme version which has superior grade chokes to eliminate coil whine (something found on many cards) and has the benefit of running passive (fans stop) at low load.
