New Build - Coil Whine noise - Cannot pin point the component

Coil Whine noise. Its always there but when a game is loaded it gets considerably louder. If i limit the FPS around 100 it drops down a but higher the FPS the worse it gets.

I ran AIDA64 Extreme and CinebenchR20 and stress tested the CPU only, the noise is still there but not as bad. Used AIDA64 for GPU only test and its worse. Running CPU and GPU test at the same times is worse as well.


Steps I've tried to find the component:
3 Different GPUs - two Sapphire RX 580s and one MSI RX580
- Ran PC without the cooler ON and noise is present
- Replaced the PSU and same issue
- Ran the PC with all storage disconnected but M.2 (OS drive) connected and the issue is still there



At this point Im thinking its the motherboard and wanted to find out if its possible that its making this noise (is it coil whine)? I tried to listen to the PC closer but I cannot pin point the source.

Most of the components were purchased from OCUK and some from Amazon.

Try getting a constant noise going, maybe in a game, then record another video and shove the mic of your phone around each suspect area.

done that in this video
start with low volume, its loud.

try rollong up a peice of paper and put one end in the pc and the other end to your ear, it should help no end finding the offending area, be sure to check all components including the psu.

in the video your using a daisy chain cable for the gpu power, try using two separate cables to improve power delivery to the card, also are you just using the 8 pin eps for the cpu power, if so install the extra 4 pin and see if it makes a diffrence at all.

failing that if the above dosent fix anything you can try enabling VRM spread spectrum within the bios, doing this changes the switching frequency for the vrm's (aka may stop the winning)

I'm about to try the paper trick but it seems really loud near the PSU which I've just replaced yesterday. Old PSU was also same model but just a year old. It could be because you dont hear other fans near the PSU in this case but I am still not sure.

I do not see VRM Spread Spectrum option within BIOS.

I connected 8+4 PIN into the Mobo but that didn't make a difference.

GPU can run on only 8 PIN connection instead of 8+6 but I tried two separate cables and same issue.

The only thing left to try is to replace Mobo but I want to make sure its that before taking the PC apart.

Even when I boot the PC I can hear the noise but its not as loud.

your second video shows the psu THAT is the problem, you have bad ripple from it which is causing the wine noise, very annoying as the psu is a platinum unit it shouldn't have thease issues, but because it's a corsair unit you'll be able to send it back to corsair for a direct replacment, just make an account and start a rma with corsair

its a brand new PSU so I can just return it to Amazon and order a different brand completely.

yea got everything and have started a return with Amazon.

I just don't get that both PSUs (same brand and model) are giving me the same issue. its just so weird.

just changed the power settings to "Power Saver" mode and its there is no noise while its idle or if im using Chrome etc.
core voltage at auto is at 0.928V and no noise.

when I change it back to any other plan it starts again.

lastly the redit post user has a problem with a diffrent mobo manufacturer, so it could be cpu related, as above try and enable vrm spread spectrum and see if the whine improves or goes away

he listed few links near the top and some have Asus mobos.

I cannot find vrm spread spectrum option on this mobo bios. gone through every settings but nothing, if i search for "spectrum" or "spread" in the bios it says no results.

I have the latest BIOS installed.

I did test the game while in power save mode and it does reduce the noise but only a bit.

I might be able to get my hands on nVidia GTX 670 tomorrow, I'm gonna try that as well.

so a quick update

Returned the original mobo, replaced withj Gigabyte Aorus Elite and same issue

tried another Corsair PSU from my friend's build but RM750x model this time and noise was gone. So i've ordered Seasonic PRIME Ultra 650. Will update this post once I receive it this week.
