Firstly, sorry for my first post being a request for you to review my new build, but thanks for taking the time :D

I've been getting tired of patching up my 7+ year old rig, and just about keeping it alive. its old, dated, dusty, smelly and you have to slap the case just the right way sometimes to make it boot now :p

I've put in the overtime at work and saved hard to completely overhaul my setup, and this is what i have put together, and just waiting to hit 'Checkout' :D

I am a pretty casual gamer, but spend almost every evening after work gaming. Im not looking to set the world on fire, but i would like to be able to run all my current games at 1080p with 60fps, and be able to run most things for the next year or two at least, and hopefully this will be a good platform to make individual upgrades in the future.

Firstly, i know the MoBo might be a little OP for this build, but aesthetics are important to me and the board i have gone for looks great (plus i wanted to go with ASUS), and factored into this choice, as i have recently bought a new case and desk ready to build to proudly display my rig.

The following just about fits my budget, alongside buying a new desk, Corsair K65 & M65 Mouse, 24" 1080p Samsung monitor & other odds and ends to make it pretty :p.

MoBo: ASUS Maximus VIII Hero Z170
CPU: Intel core i5-6600k
RAM: Kingston Fury black 16gb (2x8Gb) 2400MHz
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 Strix OC Aura 6Gb
HDD1: Samsung 850 EVO 500Gb
HDD2: Standard Seagate 1Tb
Cooling: Corsair H100i V2 Extreme
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650w 80+ Gold

Thoughts/Comments please?

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Nothing really wrong with your proposed build, the Maximus Hero is a good board although you're paying a premium for the looks. Have you considered a bundle deal with a Gigabyte board, saving you a few quid? Gigabyte have a UK RMA centre in the unlikely event of issues. Looks good too (in my opinion)

Another thing to consider is the PSU - 650w is uncomfortably in the middle. Underpowered for a SLI setup and overpowered for a single card gaming machine.

The savings made above allow for an upgrade to a GTX1070 which is a big improvement over the 1060. If sticking with the 1060 the one you have selected is overpriced. You have to really ask yourself - how much do you value aesthetics over raw performance?

Thanks for the advice, the K3 board looks pretty sexy, i have to admit :)

Payday rolled around today, and a bonus (at long last! :D) has allowed to put a little extra toward my build :)

I have upped my budget to £1,350 (give or take a few ££)

I think I'm going to stick with the VIII Hero in this build however.

I have gone for the ASUS GTX 1070 Strix, not so much for appearances sake, but mostly, because i like ASUS Cards, and also, there doesn't appear to be a very big price gap in the 1070 range, unlike the 1060 range, which has a huge price difference between low end variants, and top end like the 1060 Strix i was planning on.

I have also changed PSU for a 750w. I know i could use a 550w for the build. I also have have a couple of reasons for sticking with EVGA....

It's still based on the SuperFlower Leadex 750 (Big choice factor, i must have spent 3-4 days researching PSUs and SF seems like the obvious choice right now). I don't like the white LEDs on the SuperFlower. And i don't like the idea of running my PSU at close (ish) to its max rated output. 750w gives plenty of headroom for future upgrades, OCing and SLI, as you recommended, and hopefully only using a small portion of what the PSU is actually capable of, will increase it's lifespan and reliability (???)

Also, although this is extremely cheeky to ask. Does anyone think OCUk would consider any discount for buying this all together? Im no haggler, but there's no harm in asking :p

If you're planning on SLI then go for the 850w variant. 750w is still in no man's land.

Unlikely on the discount, no harm in trying I suppose. They would take orders like this and bigger quite often I'd imagine.

For a sizeable order, they don't mind you asking if some leds or extensions or similar can be thrown in, as long as it's reasonable. I've seen one or two OcUK staff mention this in the forums and I've put it to the test a couple of times. :) As Ted says, worst they can say is no.

Well, thanks for the advice everybody :)

I was trying to up my build spec, but stay within a set budget, but it wasn't working. An upgrade here, meant a downgrade there. I decided to sacrifice a couple of luxuries this month and put the extra toward my rig and go all out.

I'd rather have something that is built to last, and comfortably run games for the next few years, rather than buy something mid-spec and make upgrades here and there over the course of the next year.

I ended up ordering this tasty little lot last night for delivery tomorrow.

I dont think i'm sleeping tonight, i feel like a kid on christmas eve :D:D

Looks good, enjoy building it :)

I know it's a little late now but I'd have swapped out the RAM for these modules - no noticeable difference between 2400 and 2666 and you'd have saved a few quid :)

That is originally what i had in my basket, but i removed everything and started again. I did mean to get the 2400 over the 2666, but i overlooked it. I had been researching components for ages before hitting the button on this order and realized there was negligible difference.

Thanks though

As long as you're happy with it it really doesn't matter

Looks like an awesome system to be honest - it'll munch games for breakfast :D

Over the moon. :D

I haven't bought myself a complete rig for around 8 years, back when i had a Core 2 Duo and 8800GT ! I thought console was the way to go around 2-3 years ago:eek: Man, do i regret that. >.> Still ran reasonably well until what i think must have been a capacitor in my cheap, unbranded PSU blew with a bright flash and loud pop, killing my system in process. Lesson learned.

Selling up my Consoles and putting that money toward this build, or to recover the extra i invested over my initial budget.

I so miss PC gaming

Will be making a build log as soon as i get stuck into building it ^^

I'm too late as usual but I'd have dropped the H100 in favour of a Noctua air cooler as it's only 5 degrees better than a Noctua DH air cooler but 10dB noisier.
