Spec'ing up a new machine for my brother. Will be for general internet use and watching movies, no real games. Current spec I have found is the following:

MSI K9NGM2-FID, NF430, S AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 400/533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX £49.40 £58.05

AMD AM2 Athlon 64 3800 Orleans Core, 2.4GHz, 512KB Cache, Retail £62.63 £73.59

320 Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ £59.42 £69.82

1GB (2X512MB) Corsair Value Select, DDR PC3200 (400), 184 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 2.5 £70.32 £82.63

Coolermaster Cavalier 3 Silver Chrome Finish w/o PSU £38.99 £45.81

530W HiperPower Type-R Modular Black PSU Quiet Dbl Fan aPFC ATXv2.2 20/24 Pin £45.85 £53.87

Total so far about £400

Budget is around that, was thinking of the Intel Duo but don't know too much about them. Also is the AMD AM2 any good?

Cheers !!

Well, the ram you have chosen will Defenitely not work with am2 socket, you need ddr2 ram.

People are always commenting about hiper being unreliabe, maybe go with a different brand, rest of it looks good

EDIT: Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS) would fit nicely

EDIT2: I'm not a huge case person, but you might want to take a look at the antec lanboy, nice cheap case, good build, and good ventilation.

EDIT3: I see you have no graphics card, that motherboard doesn't appear to have integrated, you'll need a pci-e graphics card to get a picture :p , try the 7300GS.

You could spend extra on case/psu, but not really necessary for this setup. Mobo comes with GMA graphics card (no tv-out and only 1 DVI), but good enough to get u going. Performance of this setup at stock is better than x2 4600 am2. Didnt see any opticals and graphics (with tv-out) so this is just a like-4-like comparison with yours

Thanks very much.

Everyone else agree with the new Intel spec ? He's already got a decent DVD writer so no need for that.

Will look into the motherboard now but does sound the better option, thanks !
