Hi
So I built a new rig this evening , powered her up and she started to post , but reported that there was no CPU found and she shut down , then proceeded to post again after a few seconds and just looped until I powered it off ....... I got a faint smell of component burn..... the HS was correctly seated.

I removed CPU and it wasn't even warm.

Any suggestions ? CPU fried ?

Specs : I7 2600K
Asus P8Z68 MB
Geil DDR3 Ram
Enermax 850W PSU (Galaxy DX)

Hey. The PSU was pulled from a working machine , ASUS PT6 SE Board with i7 920 spec , it *should* be fine but i suppose with moving it from A > B it could have popped something ... im pretty sure the smell is coming from the CPU socket area....

Hi

if there in no visual sings of damage to the micro ic's on the cpu id lay it out to be a bad board,

I think you might be right . I took it out of chassis and rebuilt on desk on anti static sheet , powered her up and she posted for a sec and looped but as she did i could hear a crackling sound from board . Stripped her down quick and removed HSF and the burning smell appears to be coming form the DIGI + VRM area of the board with a rectangle blue HS on it . I smelt around the cpu socket area and it seems ok .

My concern now is , if it is a dodgy board has it also fried CPU and RAM ?

If it was a dodgy CPU it would have hardly taken out the board also would it ? The fact that the CPU wasn't even heating up would tell me there was no voltage getting to it , and that is the area of the board that is fried (DIGI + VRM )

Yeah it was cold - as were the other 2 heatsinks around the CPU socket but the DIGI + VRM heatsink was slightly warm, thats the one the smell is coming from .

I am really surprised, this is the first time this has happened to me and I always have used ASUS boards - is the P8Z68 problematic i wonder, should I have gone for a better board .
