:confused:hi all ive just eventually finsihed my new build xfx 780i,Crucial Ballistix 2GB pc8500,geforce 8800 gts 512,corsair hx620 & i could do with a bit of help setting up the cpu as im abit outta touch its bin bout 4yrs since my last build, after reading a few issues with my cpu ive updated the bios to the new rev po3 & its now saying im running at 3ghz & a muliplyer of 9x & i had to change my ram timmings also to 5-5-5-15 @2.2v but when i got in cpu-z which i noticed a lot of people use the cpu is going from 2ghz upto 3ghz & the mulitiplyer is going from 6x to 9x & the rams saying pc6400:confused: any help much appreciated

it seems to be speedstep in action there. to disable it, turn off c1e ans e1st in your bios. speedstep basicly lowers your cpu clockspeed when your pc is idle to reduce the amount of power it uses

thats brilliant thanks cpu's working spot on now still got the problem with the ram showing as pc6400 400mhz though when ive set the timings to 5-5-5-15 & uped the volts to 2.2?

Sounds like you just need to change the speed of the memory in the bios using the ram divider.

Although i've only used a p35 board for overclocking i believe i read somewhere that the nvidia boards are different and the memory speed isn't related to the fsb. You can actually set the speed of the memory to anything. Either way you need to adjust your bios to get the correct speeds.

I always leave speedstep enabled, thats the way its been designed to work lowering CPU load and power consumption on idle, do you really need your CPU running at full speed when you have gone to make a coffe ? Some people say it affects the ultimate overclock and recommend turning it off but I have never found it made much difference.

It's not just that it might affect the overclock - changing frequencies when the CPU is overclocked and overvolted puts a lot of stress on the clock generator.

Its only more or less the same as how a laptop works, don't think Intel and Mobo manufacturers would incorporate it if it damaged anything.
