New build CPU stuck

I was convinced I knew what I was doing this time.

Was going 12th gen Intel, either the I7 or I9 just because, value wasn't a consideration here, in my head I needed this for my 4k build.

Then along came AMD price cuts, potential to save a LOT here but it was never going to be at the expense of my GPU. I scoured benchmarks and saw the lower CPU's like 5600/x etc doing well with the big boys.
However I then remembered things like DLSS using CPU.

I am going to fully watercool this build and want whatever I buy to last me a good 5 years hopefully, this is why I am hesitant to go AMD, I shall be stuck with DDR4 and probably no future upgrade path.

If I hadn't seen the price drops I doubt I'd have gone back to analysis paralysis. Just because I don't have a budget doesn't mean I want to spend more, I was just decided on it. Purely gaming PC, I don't do any productivity stuff. My reasoning for going higher was better mins, that will help keep GYSNC working.

For context these are some current cpu prices:

5600 - £135
5600X - £160
5700X - £215
5800X - £259
5800X3D - £383

I9 12900k - £570
I7 12700K - £380
I5 12500k - £280

If it is a purely gaming PC then the 5800x3D is the best choice but if it was my money I would be getting a 12700k. I would never consider a 12900k.
With 4k the load is fully on the gpu so all of the above cpus will give similar fps and unless you need +240 fps for competitive shooters in all circumstances they will all work well. I know you mention DLSS but isnt the point of 4k to play natively and enjoy the perfect clarity. I think DLSS and FSR will be massively important for the next gen of consoles to be able to play on 4k tvs but for PC gaming aim for the sky.

With this aiming to be a full WC build I would be highly tempted to wait for AM5 and see what it brings to the table. Even if it is not great you would then have had a chance to see how 13th gen works for gaming and will be new gpus to consider as well..

@Haz123 Yep, the 'wait' option always seems to be there but I am VERY impatient which will be my downfall. I clearly got DLSS confused with RT which I believe is totally on the GPU now I mention it.. My worry with waiting is the availability of the parts and waiting further for the waterblocks, it could be a lot later than I wanted. I wanted to have it ready for September ideally.

As it stands I agree the I7 is probably the sensible option, giving me a great CPU and access to DDR5 and the other bells and whistles from Z690.

If you went AMD and saved a bunch of money, could you justify a CPU and motherboard upgrade down the line when 13th gen launches?

AM5 will only be DDR5 by the sounds of things.

You could also get an Intel DDR5 value build now and upgrade to 13th gen or AM5 later on, carrying over your RAM, SSD and so on.

Personally, I’d be ok with a 5800X3D and a cheap B550 board with a view to upgrade to RTX 4000 series in the future.

The problem is that we have actual relevant choices. It was far easier when AMD was releasing FX trash so we had no choice but to buy a decade old 4 core Intel chip, I almost miss the bad old days.

If it was my money for a full WC set up and pressing buy today I would have a 12700k in my basket.

I could justify it financially but not from a time/effort perspective of having to drain my setup and wait for the new blocks.

GPU is king of course.

Sure.

Question, do you need a new computer now?

Need, hmm. I don't have one and I have a PS5 so I guess not. However, ADHD impulsivity is like fighting a losing tug of war constantly. Though I could easily argue this isn't impulsive as I've been planning it a while.

Ok so maybe get a prescription for Concerta instead? Haha

I have ADHD too so I get your point.

Post your current pc specs here and let’s see. You could always upgrade your current rig with a shiny new GPU now and then look to replace the rest of the rig later with water cooling.

Funny you say that, my medication just arrived, it's Elvanse, starting on 30mg. Really hoping for a miracle.

Think you misunderstood (typical ADHD skim read thing :p), I have no PC right now, just my laptop which I shall be keeping and isn't gaming.

I'm trying to get diagnosed here in the UK.

I was diagnosed as a child and I asked my SO if I had any of the symptoms as per the NHS website and she laughed, all but maybe two.

Do want Concerta. I will PM you as I want to know what's the best way to get diagnosed. I have a callback from my GP scheduled for today but I don't think that they will be of much help.

All we have for the 4090 are rumours. It may or may not launch this year , it may be the only card Nv release this year, we just do not know. The other rumours are to do with the insane TDP with estimates well over 600w. I personally think the MSRP for the 4090 will be close to £2k so you have to ask yourself is it worth paying that and having to use all that power. The 4080 and lower may be more reasonably priced and use a lot less power but the last I heard they were not due out until next year.

If you are going to wait for a 4090 then you may as well wait for AM5 and 13th gen intel

Yep agree Haz, and whilst I don't want to sound crude, money is not an issue in this instance as it's pretty much one of my only hobbys. Holding off.

12700K is the all around best chip, you'll get 5 years out of any of CPU's you listed, especially at 4K.

This.

I'm biased, as I have one, but on my primarily gaming rig, it just flies through everything thrown at it, like Godzilla going at a mountain of fish.

I have to agree.

A 12700K should last 5 years and if you need a new computer now, why wait for September, possibly later?

Especially if you get it with a good cheap motherboard.

I'd agree but I don't need it, it's just for gaming so I can wait I guess. I've been fully convinced there is no point doing anything just yet whilst in-between gens.
