Build less than a month old running W7 RC 7100. Had performed perfectly until this afternoon when I powered on and as soon as the desktop loaded everything froze (inc. mouse and keyboard). At rare intervals it will not freeze immediately, but it always will within half an hour. There are VERY few programmes installed and not many changes have been made since install.

I have spent ages troubleshooting and am no nearer to a solution.

So far I have:

(A) System Restore - rolled back by one day, three days (Windows updates were the only new additions) and ten days.

(B) Msconfig - turned off all non-essential startup items

(C) Avast - performed a 'thorough' virus scan

(D) CCleaner - full 'clean' and registry 'fix'

(E) Temps - monitored CPU (idle @ c. 38 deg) and GPU (idle @ c. 44 deg)

(F) Switched off Aero / Gadgets

(G) Updated graphics driver to most recent

(H) Event Viewer - viewed error logs and tried to Google for solutions, ultimately to no avail

Wanarpv6

There are other error logs but I assume these are from rebooting in safe mode and applications not being able to run.

All safe modes function properly, including networking.

I have read under other topics that it could be to do with a failing HDD, faulty RAM or use of a 3rd party PCI wireless card (Linksys did not have 64 bit drivers so I had to use 3rd party for another card).

Can anyone help?

EDIT:

Have just found in error logs (occurred while in safe mode)

Well it sounds like your next step is to eliminate the possible causes you've listed. You've been very systematic so far so just keep going.

Scan your hard drives for errors
Run memtest to check your memory, also check in the BIOS that it is set at the right timings and voltages
Try disabling or removing your wireless card and see if you get the same lockups/crashes in offline mode.

PK!

Thanks for the response misterPK.

Spent the entire of yesterday getting the cretinous Samsung ESTool HDD diag util to work. Finally worked as a simulated FDD on USB once some setting abstractly equating to write protection had been turned off.

Both the HDD and RAM (Memtestx86) came up as clean.

Disabled the wireless PCI in safe mode and rebooted into normal - there was no freeze. Subsequently restarted several times to check and no freezing.

So either the device must be creating some conflict or some programme which is not started in safe mode with networking when it has access to the net leads to a freeze. No idea yet...

Any advice on next steps for pinpointing? Could the 3rd party drivers (my Linksys is installed as a Ralink RT61 v2) be causing a problem even though networking is fine in safe mode?

this has happened to me with a wireless card, pc would just randomly freeze, i managed to solve it by using a different driver.
can you not take out the wireless card and go wired for a day or so?
