New build - does not power on using case power button

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me out with a problem I have with my brand new build. After putting the new PC together I found I couldn't power it on using the power button on the case. The motherboard comes with an onboard power button which is very handy for testing purposes, and by pressing it my machine boots up. But despite connecting up the wires for the power button on the case, it does nothing when I press it! I don't know if the fault is with the motherboard pins or with the button/wiring of the case.

Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E
Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout

Any suggestions to help troubleshoot would be very appreciated!
Thanks.

You could try shorting the jumpers for the power on the motherboard if it comes on than you have a faulty switch on the case.

Also, be sure to double check all connections again, it is easy to get it wrong.

Did you use the Q-Connector?

Try plugging straight into mobo as the connector may be faulty.

Also if you can get to the back of the power button, check to see if both wires are connected.

How do I do this without damaging the mobo? I hear you can use a screwdriver to 'join' the pins but not sure if this is entirely safe!

Am I being simplistic or can I stick in the PWD wires from another empty case I have lying around into the new mobo and try to power it on using the alternative case??? That way I can at least confirm if the mobo is actually okay, and the problem is with the case wiring.

it would work ,but its easier jsut to short the pins...

Just touch a screwdriver, paperclip, something metalic accross the two pins where the pwrbtn usually plugs.
No need to hold it there long 1/2 second would be plenty.
as long as you dont short any of the other pins with it you should be perfectly safe to do this

It doesn't matter which way around the switched is plugged in. Only the LEDs matter. Check and re-check your mobo manual to ensure that you are connecting the switch to the correct pins.
