Hi guys,

I currently trying to put together a spec for a new machine and am confused about what memory to buy.

Looking to get an Asus P5K and a E6850 (don't fancy quad cores as I believe it will be a while before anything really takes advantage), what memory should I pair this with to give me a fair overclock? I haven't had an intel based machine since '98 so i'm a bit out of touch with how the whole overclock thing works with intels.

Any advice appreciated!

Nice CPU :)

Your CPU is quad pumped so even 533mhz may be enough with no OC, so to OC go for 800mhz as its dirt cheap now for 2GB kits.

Hmm 1000mhz is good for 667mhz :), Ive been there with basic Corair XMS on customers but its was 800mhz to start with.

Brilliant thanks for the advice, so not worth going down the road of 6400 or 8500 then?

If so thats good as it will save me a fair bit of cash :)

PC6400 is 800mhz, it depends, I aint used that above 667mhz ram that does 1000mhz, most good 800mhz like Corsairs will though and most of the 2GB kits are cheap.

It all depends, your mobo may work better with some brands, I use Asus mobos and they are good with Corsair and are actually launch partners at times.

I dont think you will need PC8500 though unless hope to OC ram very very high.

Cheers for that Helmutcheese, what you've said makes perfect sense and eases the confusion a little, I've spotted some Corsair 6400 parts on another site for a decent price so i think i'll go with that.

Again thanks for the help :)

Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-12) Heat Spreader Lifetime Warranty.

£73 inc. the VAT.

That sound like decent stuff?

Nope, you dont want that stuff.

Theirs no room for overclocking since the timmings are pretty loose (high) in the first place. You will be lucky if you could get that past 900MHZ to be honest.

The Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz is fantastic Memory, seriously consider it.

Plus its cheaper than the above stuff.

I have the pc5300 ballistix ram running at 900mhz easy atm, im more than confident it will clock to over 1000.

Dont buy the Corsair Dominator 4GB kit, it wont clock 20-30mhz higher or even stay stock but run 1T :( (just incase you look here)

Most Corsair is good, the run of mill XMS for all my customer builds ran 1000+mhz @ 2T or stock 800mhz @1T (never tried higher, only testing). with 2.1v

My current is a Dominator 2GB 4/4/4/12 but mobo went on fire so not using it now.

I aint got much experience with other makes, as I need try stick to 1 brand as of ease to sort out issue for customers and have spares here, I use what I find works for me on Asus mobos.
