New build failure....out of ideas

Hi all,

I finished putting together a new build earlier and cannot get it to power up.

Specs are:
Asus P5N-E SLI
C2D E6420
BFG OC 8800GT
Corsair DDR2 800 2GB

I've recycled my processor, HDD's ad DVD-RW from my last comp, the mobo, 8800GT and RAM are the only new things.

My problem is that it simply will not power up, all the lights power up for a split second, the cpu fan makes about half a rotation and then all goes blank. I've tried a different PSU with no difference made, I've tried both sticks of RAM by themselves and the same, unfortunately I don't have another PCI-E card to test if it's the 8800.

The only difference I can spot is when I unplug the 4-pin ATX power cable and leave the 24-pin in it powers up for a little longer and the fans make it up to full speed before it dies.

I've taken it out of the case to see if it's shorting out and it's the same.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated, there's nothing worse than having a new build that won't work :(

Thanks.

Sounds like motherboard to me, unless its CPU, but if you're sure its working then its most likely mobo. Can you test parts in your old mobo?

This might sound strange but I mind reading a while back about this board from a user who said it had weird quirks and wouldnt post with certain keyboards might be worth a try?

Also have you tried building with just the minimal amount of stuf to get it up and running, just ram cpu and gfx to see if it will post?, have you tried clearing the bios?

Thanks for the responses guys.

I've tested my processor in another mobo and that still works. I can't test the gfx card or the RAM, but I've tested other RAM in the mobo that I know works and still the same, so I guess the RAM is fine and the problem's elsewhere.

Also tried rubin's suggestion of clearing the cmos, did that by taking out the battery, moving jumpers then putting everything back (think that's the right way?) with the same outcome :(

I'm going to go try nothing but essentials of cpu, gfx and RAM now to see if it makes a difference......

Just done this and no difference at all, same result, I'm pretty sure it's a faulty motherboard now :(

OK, I'm organising for it to be sent back to the supplier now.

While I'm here though, do you think I should just get another P5N-E SLI? or is there a better mobo out there with 2 IDE ports, the same features; good for overclocking and whatnot for around the same price?
