Your thoughts please

This is a lot cheaper than your core components. If you are spending this sort of money then you should consider X99 as well.

Onboard audio is very good these days so I left the soundcard out.

You don't need a 1500W power supply. A 1000W is enough for SLI GTX 980 ti.

The MSI 980 ti is cheaper than the Asus. It is a better card imo.

You would just need to add the water cooling parts.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,814.66
(includes shipping: £15.90)

What is the pc being used for ? Do you already have a Monitor ?

hi again and thanks for the comments they are all helpful :-)
I've got the new Asus PG279Q ROG swift 2560x1440 165Hz

The sound card I already have so don't need to get another.

I went for the corsair PSU in case I went sli down the road. If 1000w is all I need I have a spare Corsair HX1000w PSU I have floating around. It's about 2 years old now but should be ok then.

MSI 980ti over Asus ... any reason why it's better?

If you already have the soundcard then fair enough.

Yes the HX1000 that you own will be fine to reuse, and is enough for SLI even on Z170 or X99.

The MSI still has the zero fan mode same as the Asus, so it will be silent under low loads.
In fact you could go with the standard Strix card for £539.99 and overclock it yourself. The extra cost of the 'OC' Strix is just the factory overclock.

Yes. X99 supports quad channel. In reality you'd be hard pushed to notice any difference but if the available bandwidth is there you may as well utilise it :)

so 100% final and sure on this ... if I order quad channel ram then I'm going to see a performance benefit or at the least get the benefit of using quad channel ram instead of dual channel??

Z170 is dual channel, the RAM itself is just RAM. It dont care about channels, its just confusing coz manufacturers label it as dual/quad channel kits. Its just the same sticks of RAM in each "kit".

You can put 2 x 8gb sticks in your Z170 or 4 x 4gb , so long as its DDR4 it will work.

Performance wise probably 2 x 8gb is better, but for the full bling effect of the Geil ram go for 4 x 4gb.

so saying that I can choose from any speed of ram available whether it's dual or quad channel ... what if I went crazy with:
Avexir
Blitz Original Red 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C18 3600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit - Red Light
Never heard of the brand though ... suggestions?

Either will work. On Skylake you need to have 2 sticks or 4 sticks to get dual channel. The Grey Ram slots work as a pair, and the Black Ram slots work as a pair.

Any make of Ram is fine to be honest. They all come with lifetime warranties.
