Hello all,

right it's 2012, and it's time to up the old girl to something a little more pokey.

my current build is:

AMD Athlon x4 965BE
Corsair 4gb DDR1600
Gigabyte 790FXTA-UD5
ATi 5870 1024mb
1x2tb HDD
1x1tb HDD
1x512mb HDD
1x750mb HDD
Asus Xonar DS 7.1
800w PSU
Antec 900

So i'm thinking of something thats very good, but not busting the bank for a fractional improvement.

ie. an i7 vs an i7 extreme, the cost difference is a lot for not a huge gain.

so my current thoughts are either upgrade the AMD system or do i build another?

If I built another my selection is as follows.

Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge)
Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz
Asus P8Z68 DELUXE GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155)
OcUK ATI Radeon HD 7970 3072MB
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive
OCZ ZX Series 1000W PSU
Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BluRay ROM / DVDRW DL & RAM
BitFenix Shinobi Gaming Case

comes to £1361.

However i can see that CPU Memory and Motherboard? are pretty much the same as my current system. Are they? I'm a little out of touch with the way things are.

Hard drive could be a upgrade to the current system. I'm thinking of consolidating the hard drives into two drives instead of four, minor detail...
Graphics card is definitely an upgrade.

So if you were doing it what would you do?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Luke.

Hey :)

I'd get this RAM instead: anything over 1600MHz isn't worth it for an i5/i7 set up:

Other than that, looks pretty good. People tend to recommend Corsair and Crucial SSDs over the OCZs, just for reliability.

Make sure to get the retail bluray drive, as that will come with software to play it.

Is this for gaming? If so, you could save some £ and get an i5 2500K instead - it'll perform just as well in games as the i7. Also, if you got a decent cooler for the i5 you could overclock to 4-4.5+Ghz no problem :) Something like this perhaps:

what is your main use for this new build? If its gaming then you may as well go for the i5 2500k as it will perform the same for games. Also, i'd go for the crucial m4 for the ssd, much more reliable.

Edit: damn, beaten to it, lol

Well the system is used for video editing, photography, and gaming.

noted about the RAM, and the SSD, i'll amend that.

bearing in mind the old system, is it worth working on that or am I better off with the i7, keeping in mind the extra cost? just exploring all the options :)

If you are using software that makes use of the hyperthreading on the i7 then you should see an extra 20 percent in performance. Its up to you to determine if that is worth the extra outlay to you.

Taking account of all posts before me i would agree with all of them BUT one thing i would take a serious look at is holding off on the AMD 7970 and see what the new Nvidia Keplar cards are like ... NOT saying the 7970 is a bad card BUT if your spending that amount on a new card and with the impending launch of Nvidia's new cards it might just be worth holding off on the card for now

Ok peeps thanks for the feedback. I think from this i'll wait for the nVidia cards to release see whats happening there, probably buy which ever is best, and then see how long the current system lasts. For the extra cost i don't believe i will see a good return at the moment, again if anyone believes differently post it up

thanks all :)

^^
Depends how serious you are about the video editing and photography work. Not sure about 1300 more like a 350-450 bundle, something like THIS, for example just add more ram. Or buy the components and overclock yourself.

That 5870 is no slow coach and depending on what res you game at you would really be best to forget about the top GPUs.
