Hi guys,

New build for a co-worker who is looking for something to use at home for Internet use, E-mail, office (works in finance so high excel work)

Not a gamer but would like a deadicated graphics card but doesn't need to be high spec.

He's picked some parts, listed below, so if something can be built around the idea's below, it would be handy. Everything would be required.

Processor: Intel Core i7 4790K or the I5 version.
Memory: 16gb
Motherboard: ?
Hard Drive: Solid-state HD for the OS with Mechanical second drive.
Optical drive: Blue-ray writer / DVD writer
Operating System: Windows 10 (x64)
Case: Small and not too loud.
Power Supply: ?

He was thinking of around < £1k

Ideas?

Seems overkill for an office type machine for emails and internet.

G258, 8GB, 750Ti or variant would work out a heck of a lot cheaper. Or just a 4690/4790 non K unless he plans to have a 4.7Ghz CPU for excel.

Certainly does but thats what the man asked for.

Hi guys, I have questioned the 'K' CPU and that's the one he wants.. so. (Why.. Don't ask me)

I'll pass the build along to him, and see what he says.

Thanks for the advice gents.

'K' cpu will give him overclock potential for the extra it costs.
Whilst ram is cheaper now than it has been...16GB? Really?
Rendering machines use that much, not much else does.

mickyflinn.....will an optical drive fit into the m-itx case you spec'd?

How big and how complex are his spreadsheets? How many sheets in a workbook?

No idea to be honest, but he's sure he wants those parts.

He's happy with the build above and I gave a few ideas on how to cut the price down (I5 over I7, 8GB not 16Gb) but he's happy with it.

The case might need changing so he's taking a look at one that pleases him atm.

Lets us know what case he picks, if its a larger then we can choose a bigger motherboard which will give you more space.

How big are these spreadsheets if he needs an overclocked i7!?! If you need an overclocked i7 for Excel it shouldn't be in Excel! Just seems like a HUGE waste of money for a man in Finance :p

I will just echo above comments, this is all definitely overkill for excel. :p

Save some money and get an i5.

Agreed but despite highlighting that he won't even push that chip never mind get it to a point that he needs to start learning to overclock, the man wants what the man wants.

I offered that to the man, the offer was declined. Why? Meh... I don't ask these days.

Downgrade the CPU and get a 34" 3440x1440 screen, brill for excel workings.

34" 3440x1440.... Hell, I hate excel but using one of those, I'd Vlookup all day. :)

No news on the case as of yet.... :o
