Hi im looking to either get a desktop or build one myself. I know its not that tricky to do yourself but ive read forum posts where things can go wrong and its a time consuming process to isolate the faulty part or problem device.

Thing is, ive seen desktops on competitor that look incredible for the price...and im thinking even if something like the psu is crap i can change that out no worries...heres an example.

Intel Core I5 4670K 3.4ghz 8mb Cache 4th Gen Haswell CPU Socket - Intel 1150
Motherboard - Asus Z87-K
Power Supply Corsair CX600 80 Plus Bronze 600w Power Supply
8gb Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866Mhz Performance Ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 2gb GDDR5
240gb Kingston V300 Solid State Drive
Optical Drive -Samsung 24x SH-224DB/BEBE Sata DVD Writer
Case built in - unsure what that means tbh (apart from the obvious :D)

^^ all that is competitor price. Which to me looks very price competitive. maybe need to change out the psu at some point but i cant see a drawback with my limited knowledge.

Im looking for something that is as future proof as possible (no monitor keyboard, speakers required as i got them). Will be doing gaming and video editing ohh and it has to be good enough to use with an Oculus Rift. :D
I dont mind a lower spec graphics card if that lowers the price considerably as thats easily upgradeable. Though i wouldnt mind playing current games on high :)

Atm i have a laptop that is holding onto life barely....can run Skyrim on mediumish-high. Other more demanding games chuck the quad cpu into 90 degrees heat.

BUDGET £770

8GB. Pretty good to start off, the ram is okay for video editing, but depending on what Video editing software you want to use you may want to add a few GB of RAM in there, especially if you are using the likes of Nuke.

 that is not a bad deal, but be careful with competitors and prices! I assume you knew that though :p

yes i did which is why i did not say the name of the pc or just copy and paste it but i thought it was ok to mention rainforest chaps..guess not.

One SSD for the OS and programs. One larger 1TB for general storage and holding on to stuff.

So a C: drive and a big D: drive to keep stuff on.

Or leave it out if you dont want it or have an alternative solution like an external backup/NAS.

ok thanks :D Is there possibility of going sli/crossfire on my setup? Also dual monitors or triple?

Also with that case does it have good space? airflow? room for more fans etc?

Im basically building this blind as ive never built a pc before :D What other tools u reckon i would need?

Ready to start ordering stuff today :D :D ...ohh i thought forum users got free delivery or was that a few years back hehe?

Should i look at the MM to save myself a few pounds?

edit: also i read a review of this board MSI Z97S SLI PLUS Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard in micromart.. and it got great ratings across the board 9/10 I generally am clueless when deciding about one motherboard over another. There is £30 difference between this and the Gigabyte one why not go for the MSI one?

That is Crossfire/SLI ready now.

The board will run two GFX cards at an equal 8X/8X each. The PSU is suitably beefed up to cope with two cards.

The antec case seems well spec'd for its RRP, comes with three fans already, cant really see anything negative about it.

You can run two screns of a single card (so one with a movie on and the other with work stuff) or Eyefinity which is three screens in a super wide screen format for gaming etc or again work stuff.

i think i will stick with the single GPU option thanks anyway :)

Is it possible to be notified when an item is going on sale or is reduced? (notifed by email) as i notice some of the items on my list were on some kind of sale and went back up in price whoops!

Basically each day there are two items on "daily deal" and that lasts until the next morning around 09:00hrs or until the quantity is sold.

The other deal is the "weekly" deal which goes from Wednesday lunchtime (roughly) to Wednesday lunchtime.

Sometimes I get emails sometimes I don't, it always pay to just look with your own eyes.

Hi stulid what is the warranty situation on parts bought from ocuk?

On a competitor site i can get a prebuilt rig for £605 buying the same gear off of OCUK it is around £573 (but obviously unbuilt and without the 5 year warranty or overclocked)

heres the quick list from the prebuilt rig

Zalman Z3 Gaming Case with Fan Controller - Black
Intel Core i5 4690K Haswell Refresh Processor 3.50 GHz (Overclocked to up to 4.3GHz)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler
Gigabyte Z97-HD3 Motherboard - Haswell CPU only
8GB PC3-10666 1333MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 4GB sticks)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 1024MB Graphics Card
1000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
24x SATA DVD+/-RW Drive
Corsair Ultra Low Noise 600W PSU
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
5 Year Warranty with 2 Years Collect and Return (UK only)

£605 inc vat

The gear is slightly different to the specs youve mentioned. (mainly i have dropped the SSD and the 280x and it will come with a basic gt620)

Reason i have dropped them because i will buy the 280x and the SSD 2 weeks after(once wages are in lol)

Would that rig i have listed run fine with a 280x you think?

....however im not finished :D the delivery from this other place is £29.99 and from ocuk it is only £11.75 soo.......

which means our totals are

£635 = COMPETITOR prebuilt, overclocked and 5 year warranty including a basic graphics card nvidia gt620 card.

£587 = OCUK bought individually same parts/software

£48 quid difference hrmm so i am in a bit of a quandary.

How hard is it to do overclocking? (on the i5 4690k) i can get everything i want really (the ssd) (well except a bluray drive but i can get that later) from ocuk for £625 inc delivery also dont need to wait for it to be built...hrmmmmm decisions decisions! And then i can get a 280x (either on mm or elsewhere etc)

***edit not sure if including the competitor prices is ok as i havent mentioned the name?***

On pre-built systems you get 24 months with ocuk. You can up it to 3 years for £119.99.

I don't know if the warranty is the same across all systems, i.e lower end/high end.

You will still get the individual parts warranty if they exceed the 2/3 years you get with ocuk, EG The EVGA Supernova has 10 years warranty.

ok thanks to being able to grab a few things via the mm i can pull the trigger on this lot.

MSI Z97 Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £87.95
Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter £79.99
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02733) £73.99
Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Case - Black (CC-9011014-WW) £59.99
SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
£49.99
Alpenföhn Brocken ECO CPU-Kühler - 120 mm £24.95
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £10.99

total = £387 inc vat

Just bought Kingston Hypergenesis ram and a MSI 280x via mm
i know i didnt include a cpu but buying that next week ish. Have i forgotten anything else? :D

Also Stulid you recommend a lot the Alpenföhn Brocken ECO CPU-Kühler. Is it very worthwhile just gettting an OEM cpu and using this heatsink/fan? As opposed to just buying the retail version of the cpu with the stock fan/heatsink. I havent seen any reviews for the Alpenfohn Brocken ECO CPU-Kuhler (in english anyway).

The retail CPU's have a 3 year vs 1 year for the OEM warranty, plus the proper box and stock heatsink.
