Hello!

Right, been lurking for a while, reading forums and watching videos desperately trying to figure out what will meet my needs. Hoping I can get pointed in the right direction, there's just so much to consider for a newbie it's a bit overwhelming!

Here's what I'm looking for...

I love making viodeos, I've recently got a GoPro which can record with 4k resolution, I however will mainly be using it for 1080p 60fps 99.9% of the time.

My current pc (dual core, 3Ghz, 4gb RAM, all components are cheap and nearing the end of their natural lives) really struggles with the footage I capture, understandably. It's an old rig with only a bit of life left.

So I've been looking at overclockers, building all sorts of computers trying to figure out what I need. Most of the time I think I just go into overkill mode and build a complete beast of a PC. I know it's sensible to future proof it, but my requirements aren't really going to change much in the next year or two.

I keep reading that Intel are the way to go, even though you get more bang for your buck with AMD. Do I need to go with an i7, or will a lesser AMD processor do a similar job, is an SSD necessary, 4, 8, 16gb of RAM?? I just don't know.

The pre-built AMD systems on overclockers seem pretty good for the money, but will they be able to keep up. Sorry, I'm clueless. Any help would be much appreciated =)

Time and money ;) You can spend less and wait longer for renders, or spend more and wait around less. All depends how you value your time. I'm sure you could spend 6-700 hundred and get a typical gaming PC that does a decent job. Or 5 times that and get something that can chomp 4 K video...

First thing that stands out to me is 60 fps is a high frame rate. Compared to 25 fps, you're going to be rendering 2.5 x the number of frames, so the first thing you should do is ask yourself if 25 is enough.

Do you already have software? Something like Sony Vegas will put you back £400 ish so make sure to factor that in. The reason being different software use more/less of the CPU/GPU. Also the way you use it will impact this - if you're not likely to use dozens of filters then you can probably turn the GPU reqs. down a bit.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry I didn't reply sooner, didn't know there had been replies.

I currently use a mix of Sony Vegas and GoPro studio. Both of which are nearly looking my old pc!

The best way I've found around this is to proxy edit the videos (convert my he footage to SD, edit that, then swap the SD footage for HD before rendering!). But that's time consuming and I'm sure a better pc will make things easier.

I was making videos every week for YouTube, just one. But because my pc is so sluggish I hate editing the footage as it takes forever.

Where's the best place to start?

I want the pc to be able to playback and edit my footage easily.

Thanks!

Basically looking at various systems, was just wondering if I would be wasting money on a PC with most of the bells and whistles. Would I be better off going cheaper and upgrading along the way?

I'd spend what you can now. The max you can afford. Saves hassle in the future and you can get going straight away and you will still probably have decent upgrade paths in the future

So with that in mind how about...

  • AMD Piledriver FX-8 8350 4.0GHz
    16GB DDR3, 1600MHz RAM
    AMD Radeon R7 260X, 2048mb
    Samsung 120GB 840 EVO SSD
    Seagate Barracuda 1TB, 7200RPM
    Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit

Is that too much/too little.

Am I spending money in the right places? Thanks.

What was your budget for that?

I'd be going Z97 + Intel, it has upgrade paths whereas that 8350 has no upgrade paths due to AM3+ being a dead socket pretty much. If you went with an i3 + Z97 you'd at least have the opportunity to slot in a 4770k/4790k/4670k/4690k in the future for an extra boost

Okay, thanks. Need to do a lot of research regarding CPU's, what AMD's are comparable to Intel etc. That came in at about £750. Though I think that included some discount (pre-built system on overclockers with a few adjustments made by me).

I've read that Intel would probably be the best way to go, purely cost that was making me think AMD.

For £750 you should be able to get a 4690k, half-decent GPU, Win 8 64bit in budget. Definitely intel for these uses and budget
