My friend has just bought a brand new base-unit, minus operating system. Last night he tried installing an old copy of XP to it (and did so successfully), but the largest partition he can have on his 500GB HDD is ~130GB. He has checked, and the drive is definately a 500GB one! He has also tried deleting and then re-creating partitions during the initial XP setup, but to no avail.

Any ideas as to why this is? I was going to lend him my much newer version of XP in case this fixes it?

Thanks :)

The un-service packed version of XP does not support 48LBA and hence is limited to 132Gb partitions. The options you have are either to use the version he has and extend the partition (after applying the XP service packs) with GParted or the like. Alternatively install using an XP disk with one of the service packs (preferably SP3) already slipstreamed onto it.
