New Build - HDD Probs

OK so I updated my rig recently, all I kept from the old one was:
GFX Card
Sound Card
PSU
2 x HDDs

The HDDs are IDE but with the new parts I got a Sata DVD RW and a Sata HDD. With the Sata DVD RW, Sata HDD, and IDE HDDs all connected the machine isn't seeing the IDE HDDs at all.

The very first time I turned on after building it did see one of the IDE HDDs but now nothing.

Anyone got any idea?

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Abit IP35 PRO
NVIDIA 7800GT
4GB Corsair DDR2
Pioneer DVR-212DBK 18x DVD±RW SATA
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Western Digital 80GB IDE HDD
Western Digital 200GB IDE HDD
 
Have you got them on the same cable? and have you set them to master/slave.
 
Yea, I set the 80GB to Master and the 200GB to Slave. They are on the same cable yea, the one that came with the motherboard. I have Windows installed on the Sata HDD.

Does the board see them when only 1 drive is connected? Is IDE turned on in the bios?
 
Just tried this...

With the Sata Drive and 1 IDE HDD it only saw the IDE one, which has no OS on so nothing happened, unplugged both IDE so just the Sata is in and now its hanging on bootup (I'm on another PC now) the display on the Mobo says 75 which is in the manual as "Detect and Install all IDE Devices". It didn't do that before just trying one being plugged in.

Really stuck now..
 
Are the drives not showing in the BIOS or just not in Windows?

EDIT: From what I can make out in the manual IDE drives won't show in the main system BIOS since they're controlled by the JMicron controller, there should be a separate splash screen after the main POST which shows them.

Bios didn't see them either. Nothing acknowledges their existence except when theres only one plugged into the ribbon.

If the Sata has the OS on, should both the IDE HDDs be set to slave or still one set to master?

The master and slave (or device 0 & 1 as they should be known now) setting simply allows two drive to co-exist on the same IDE cable. Whether there is a SATA drive present or not is irrelevant.

Right, I just tried again by plugging just one of the IDE drives into the master connection on the ribbon and the PC has booted up first time and now sees the drive.

Only problem is it says it needs formatting but it's actually 90% full of my stuff from the previous build. Why is it saying its not formatted? It's NTFS like the other one so I'm lost...
 
I had one set as Master but forgot to set the second as slave - that was dumb, so I decided to try and get just one working, I put the master connector into the drive without a jumper, so its not set to either master or slave, could that be my problem, that it NEEDS to be set to what connector is in it?

Sorry if I'm making dumb mistakes, this is one of my first big upgrades :D
 
You need to set the drives to master or slave using jumpers on the drive, once you do that it doesn't matter which connector on the cable you use (the connectors are labelled to allow the use of "cable select" mode on the drives).
 
Right, well I set the jumper on a drive to Master, plugged in the ribbon and turned it on, it sees it, but again it says it needs formatting which isn't right as there's stuff on there.
 
OK.

I've just tested both IDE drives on another system and that sees them in Partian Magic as "Bad" and windows says they aren't formatted.

Obviously somethings gone wrong on them and they are currupt, is there any way/programs of getting the data back as some is Uni work which is needed.

Sorted.

Using testdisk to copy the files to another HDD before formatting it.

Was fine except the boot section was screwed up so the half with my info on was as it was but the half I had for an OS on the old set up was mashed up and wouldn't boot therefore the disk was seen as broke.
 
Yea, I got all my data back now so I'm happy as Larry, just running some tests on them before putting data back on them. If they dont seem right I'll get two more 500GB Sata ones, being honest I'm looking for an excuse to do that anyway :D
