New builder here so hope you all can give me some feedback please.
I’ve been reading all the posts looking for ideas and similar systems/usages and have listed what I think will do the job.
1. I’m not a gamer.
2. No overclocking intended.
3. Heaviest usages will be:
a. recording acoustic instruments
b. photograph manipulation and
c. Analogue and DV video capture, editing and output to DVD

First questions:
How critical is RAM for my purposes? I’m not clear on the differences, the ‘latency ratings’ etc.
Do I really need 2GB or would 1GB do ok or do I need ‘faster’?

Would a graphics card along the lines listed do ok?

Although I understand that USB2 is ‘faster’ then firewire, the preference in capturing from my DV Camcorder is to use the firewire (seems to work better, eg dropped frames etc.).
I was also considering an MSI P965-Platinum iP965, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, Sata II, Sata Raid, ATX as it has firewire, but it’s not on the product section of Overclockers so I guess I could just add a card to the Asus board?

Is ‘noise’ an issue I should be looking at?

Budget-wise, I just want what will do the business for now and can be beefed up as and when so, around the figure shown.

Btw, I have various monitors, an external 250GB HDD, keyboards etc

Sorry for all the questions in view of the numbers of ‘check spec’ requests and I’d be glad to have your thoughts – even if I’ve got to start thinking again from scratch.

Thank you for now.

No-one?

Being new to posting on a tech forum like this, maybe I've not been concise enough in my request for assistance.
Sorry if my original post was a bit longwinded or boring.

Anyway, thanks all for reading.
.. bye.

Might I suggest swapping the Mobo for the Asrock Conroe945G-DVI ? It has intergrated graphics (which is plenty good enough for desktop applications) and only costs ~ £50.

I would get a second HDD for all your media files (500GB perhaps?) and possibly reduce the size of your first HDD (for OS and programs).

2GB ram is probably best as you will be manipulating large files.

USB2.0 is (on paper) slightly faster than firewire but USB has considerable 'overheads' which leads to it being slightly slower in the real world.
