Hi, i did start another thread about upgrading my old setup but now i am playing with the idea of a new build. I plan to reuse a harddrive i already have untill the cheap SSD drives come back.

The LCD does 1920x1200 and i would like a graphics card that fits in with the chosen CPU and can do a few recent games close to that res. Its the thing i understand the least (naming conventions etc) so its pointless me guessing when there are tons of experienced people here  Not sure on how to pick a budget for the graphics card as they have come down in price so much.

Once that is picked how does the above sound?

I just took the suggested ram from my other thread i dont really know much about ram either :O

The barebones case has the motherboard and a 300watt psu, and i will be reusing a spare (laptop possibly) harddrive.

Have i missed anything? Suggestions / comments?

Thanks

To play a game at 1920x1200 you'll need a 4870 or gtx280 ideally... And then you'll need a PSU in the region of 650w...

On a side note, dont bother with cheap SSD's, they are slow and more trouble than they are worth.

Agree with Conan - You'll need a GPU like a Nvidia 260/280 or ATI 4870

Maybe look at a SLi or Crossfire setup depending on if your motherboard supports it and your budget? two lower priced 4750's for example might beat a single 4780 - although i'm giving an example, i havn't checked the benchmarks!

Well even a couple of steps back from 1920x1200 would be fine!

ATI suggests a 400watt psu for use with the following:
HIS HD 4670 IceQ (Full HD 1080p) HDMI 512MB (128bit) GDDR3 Dual DL-DVI & TV (HDCP) PCIe (RoHS)

But i am going to have no optical drives, 1 harddrive (laptop), perhaps only one stick of ram (revamp another computer with the spare stick).

And its been a general trend that people massivly overate the needed wattage for their setups.

I arnt spending £200 odd quid thats for sure.

Any guesses on what res that ati 4670 will do on say counter strike soiurce? Anything respectable at all?

Plan to place the order after i eat here unless any ones input makes me do otherwise

Rubbish. The rig in my siggy draws 340w at the wall when gaming and that includes the monitor, speakers and water cooling set up. The psu in that barebones will need replacing though. Providing it's a standard size psu, a decent 450-500w one will be enough. The E5200 is a very low power cpu. I have one in my second pc clocked to 3.6Ghz, Gigabyte P35 DS3R, 4x1GB ram and a 3850 512mb and that rig only draws 158w while gaming. People always over-estimate the size of psu required. That's how i ended up with a 750w one when in reality i found that i only need a fraction of that.

A 4670 will probably struggle at that res. It is only a budget card strangled by a 128bit bus. The standard psu would be fine but you won't be playing any recent games at max res with any details turned on.

Thanks for chipping in, helps put my mind at ease a little with perhaps just going for it with the above ati card.

I saw a pretty big setup yesterday that only used 310watts.

Your screen and speakers must at least use 50w of that i would guess?
And your card will be much more hungry than the one i am after and i will have no optical drives and a low power sata drive.

Just wonderng how much of my psus 300watts can i actually use. Would rather not upgrade the psu. (but note i wont be buying a fairly fancy card by the looks of it)

Things are looking good :D

If you are going for the 4670 the 300w psu will be more than enough. A 4670 draws 55w load and 16w idle. My 3850 is a lot more power hungry than one of those. Even a standard 4850 only draws a max of 110w and 41w idle. A 4870 draws 130w load and 65w idle. A stock GTX 280 is 178w load and 50w idle. That psu will not manage a GTX 280 or a 4870 but may just about manage a 4850 depending on the amps on the 12v rail.

I got the power consumption figures from here from a post by SiverSurfer.

Great info, takes a lot of the guess work away.

Thank you!
