I know it's late, and Friday night to boot, but I could really use a little help ...

I've just built my first PC, but it seems to have gone a bit wrong. Here are the specs:

Intel Quad Core Q6600
2GB Corsair XMS 6400 RAM
Antec 300 Case
Hiper 530w PSU
MSI P35 Neo2 Socket 775 mobo
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB HDD
and the DVD/CD drive from my old PC

So I installed everything, took my time, made sure I did everything right (but now, who knows?) and then switched it on, connected to the monitor, mouse and keyboard from my old PC. It makes all the right noises, the fans are all spinning, so it's looking good. I get the MSI splash screen on the monitor, then a quick flash of writing (white against the black screen) that includes the word 'initializing' - then a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner. And that's all. So I switched everything off, checked connections, etc, switched on again - same deal. Splash screen - 'initializing' - flashing cursor.

I've tried five times now, and it's the same every time. As I said this is my first build, so it's perfectly possible that I've connected something incorrectly, or not connected it at all, or god knows what else; then again, the rig switches on, and everything seems to be doing what it's supposed to.

It's a new HDD so there's no OS installed yet, but I don't know how to go about that because I can't get past the black screen/cursor.

If there's any other info that might help shed some light on the problem just ask.

Meantime, I'm all ears ...

i may be wrong as its late i have had a drink and cant thnk straight lol but isnt that whats ment to happen if you dont have the windows cd in the drive ?

you do have the cd in the drive dont you ?

can you get into bios?

set the first boot priority device to your DVD drive.. keep the windows disk inside the drive..

if you did do this and its not getting past that flashing rubbish then ive noticed this happen on vista, and i think was due to scratched disk? give it a rub

or you saying you cant get to bios?

No, haven't even managed to enter BIOS, but I've just unistalled/reinstalled the lot again, so I'm gonna give it another go ...

you will most likely need to do a fresh install on windows. I would back up everything important then format your hard drive followed by installing windows again.

He said its a new disk :p

BTW when u start the pc keep pressing the Del. key that should bring up the bios and all u need to do is set main/1st boot to the dvd drive. Restart and install from the disk disk :)

Don't ask me what I did, but that last uninstall-everything-reinstall-it-all-again seemed to do the trick. Got the OS installed (wish somebody had told it would take so loooooong...) so I'm good to go.

And tired. It's nearly 5 a.m. for cryin' out loud!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Appreciated...
