I`m just over my budget of £700 so dont really want to go any higher, will be for general use mostly with some gaming.

Hi

sorry but I wouldnt get anything like that, this would be a much better set up, add in your optional cards and its about the same price but much better performance and future upgradability

I dont know why he'd recomend you only get a 32bit OS? tbh I dont know why theyre even still able to be bought, the bugs have been ironed out of 64bit and its much better, more secure and uses all your available memory unlike 32bit OS's
Socket 775 is a dead socket, theyre not making anymore chips so imo its better to go for AM3 which is more likely to be able to accept future upgrades, plus you get the tricore CPU which has the extra core over intels dual core, also if you do decide to go 775, then Id avoid the nforce chipsets - I see youve selected it due to SLI support but the earlier nforce chipsets were very buggy and dont perform well, the AM3 I listed supports crossfire so you could add a 2nd gfx card later still if needed (though you would need a better PSU for this), and the 4850 is about on a par with the 9800, maybe slightly better. The HDD Ive selected is better and faster, and whilst the case/PSU is relatively cheap its a solid budget performer

Edit: Cmndr Andi's spec looks good too, either of these are a big improvement on your mates Im afraid

Hi techr, here is my spec based on a core 2 quad. Just need to add your tv tuner and card reader.

Btw, the 4850 is much faster than the 9800gt despite its low price.
On the OS front, XP is pretty much dead and 64 bit is a must. Infact, you can download windows 7 release candidate from microsoft and use it for free until march 2010 if you want to save some money.
