My m8 has asked me to spec him up a new system..
hes restricted to a max 300 quid for mobo, cpu and ram
ive speced a I3 bundle... any opinions ???

Personally i dont know jack about the new I3's but they seem to be in the right price bracket.

What will he be using it for?

Also, if he wants a system and has £300 for CPU, Mobo, RAM - what is his budget for the rest of the system components?

Sry should have said ..
hes already got the rest of the system
more of an upgrade than a totally new system ..

So his gpu is pci express .. just the rest thats needed !!

Ah, ok - that makes sense.

But what will he be using it for?

If it is for gaming then the i3 would certainly be the best bet. However, if he is using a lot of CPU intensive multi-threaded applications then an AMD Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4 would be a better choice.

You could get quite a decent system for around £300.

Here are two different builds for the price:

AMD Phenom II X4 based build

Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £136

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM

Has shot up in price by around £14 on OcUK recently.

Asus M4A79XTD Evo ~ £89

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-366-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

This motherboard has an 8+2 phase VRM with cooling, all solid capacitors and can do symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X.

OR

Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 ~ £71

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-244-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

This motherboard has an 8+2 phase VRM and all solid capacitors.

4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 RAM ~ £80

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-028-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516

The total comes to around £287 to £305 excluding postage.

Intel Core i5 750 based build

Intel Core i5 750 ~ £164

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-299-IN

Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H ~ £75

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-234-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1124

This is one of the cheaper H55 motherboards available so I am uncertain how good it is for overclocking. The higher end P55 motherboards tend to have more phases in their VRMs though.

4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 ~ £80

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-028-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516

The total comes to around £319 excluding postage.

OTH,I assume that the OP has a decent PSU.
