hi this is the spec that I have picked for my first EVER build, is there anything anyone would change? or anything I should know about any of it before I start building it??

thanks all

OR would a antec 902 be enough room and cool enough?

What is the rig for?

If the answer is gaming then a hex core is OTT most games won't use 4 let alone 6. I'm a lil worried about the PSU as it's generic. A corsair or OCZ would be better.

The spinpoint F3 drives are quick and you could get a 500GB for the price of that 320 WD

this is a bit better, has a better cpu and will overclock quite a lot more compared to your build and should be very quiet, also a lot better PSU, can be swapped out for a lesser modular one though to save costs, 650w at least, also only buy good brand PSUs not generic ones and finally this Samsug F3 is far better than the WDC 320GB

Gonna bee an awesome system!
Only thing I would say is swap the HD, I'm pretty sure you can get 500GB Samsung F3 which is quicker for £1 more.
I'm not sure about an OCUK 850W for that cheap, personally I would go for something branded like Antec True Power or Corsair

I disagree with HW91 that i7-930 is a better CPU. Personally, 1090T performs just as well on games as the i7-930. For video encoding or multithreaded applications 1090T will out perform plus its about £10-20 cheaper than an i7-930. And the 5870 is better than the GTX 470 and his rig is more money??

I used a far better PSU, 6GB of memory costs more than 4GB, I included a CPU cooler and a GPU cooler which maxes out at less than 30dB which is less than pretty much all 5870's

my build is based on the standpoint that you're going to overclock it, upgrade it later or you want it to be quiet

plus the 1090T only catches up to the 3.33GHz 975x at 4GHz which is pretty much the limit, and obviously an i7 930 can overclock past 3.33GHz

fenrirs are big and loud, plus Venoms are pretty good coolers, just because 1 review site doesn't like them doesn't mean others don't

yea I want it as a gaming rig mainly but also want to do some band recording on it too, Im pretty sure recording is all about the HDD read and write so any suggestions there? I want it to be really futureproof tho as this is like a one off treat haha. I really do like the look of the crosshair iv :(

WHAT TO DO????!!!!!

the crosshair IV won't give you much over the X58R-UD3R, if anything other than the ROG stuff

@HW91 you pretty much illustrated all the points I made just seconds before your post. Without knowing exactly what the rig is for it's hard to "fine tune" the spec but the PSU should never be skimped on.

Windows will gobble up RAM so the more the better. We should point out in advance that windows 64bit versions are required to use more than 4GB to save any tears.

I personally think he could drop the CPU down to a quad still sticking with AMD. With intels new chips changing socket, upgrading with AMD will be easier but until we know what it's for it's hard to advise.

^ well he wants to do recording which involves encoding which is certainly thread hungry, so I'd stick with the 930

I'd definitely stick with the F3, fastest HDD at the moment plus it's got 3x the storage of the WD drive for an extra £7

Typical an answer is posted whilst im typing to make me look stupid ;p

Well jon I think you got pretty close with your first try. Save some £s getting a Phenom quad core as the extra cores in the hex cpu aren't a factor for gaming. Push that money to the PSU to upgrade it and switch the HDD for the spinpoint f3 and you have a very decent gaming rig with upgrade opportunities in the future.

Good luck with the build

and will the nvidia card play all the latest games maxed out? and is it easy to overclock on that motherboard. thing is Ive done all my research overclocking looking at amd thinking i was going that route but u might of swayed me haha coz of the recording issue

Intel is pretty easy to overclock, although there are a few more variables which help in overclocking

also I included the aftermarket cooler for the GTX 470 which will make it quieter than the 5870 and it should overclock past 5870 levels. Don't forget to test the 470 with the stock cooler first before installing the new cooler because installing the new cooler voids the warranty (it's worth it though)
