The girlfriend wants a PC because she is getting frustrated with how long it takes to render her CAD files etc on her laptop. When it comes to gaming I know what I'm looking for but don't really have much of a clue when it comes to CAD and rendering etc. so my challenge is a decent Rig for her needs, what would I be looking at? i5 or i7 or neither. Doesn't have to be amazing just better than her little dual core laptop.

I'm thinking of maybe letting here have my z77 and 2500k and buying myself an i7 or something. Would a 2500k cut it?

Budget ideally needs to be as low as possible, this is just for the rig itself no OS, peripherals or monitor. I can always go second hand as well. Say £500 max?

For rendering an i7 will be quicker due to the hyper threading, so if you could get a second hand 2700k or something like that you'd be laughing but an i5 would be no slouch my brother renders loads of videos on an i5 and he doesn't seem to complain about it.

I think you'd be best off getting the board and cpu second hand and then buying the rest new.

I was thinking the hyperthreading might help a lot, but then if she can get my i5 and board for nothing is it worth it?

In terms of GPU is it even that needed? Maybe a 750 or something would do?

Yeah the i5 would be a definite upgrade from a dual core laptop, on an SSD would speed things up. A GPU will help with programs that used accelerated gpu hardware or something, but I have no clue whether you would want AMD or Nvidia, I think opengl or whatever it is works best with AMD but don't quote me on that.

I used to do a lot of CAD work at college and it would take so long to render the stuff on their desktops I got fed up in the end and just rendered them at home on my PC.
