Hey I'm in the midst of building a new computer and I just wondered if any of you guys had any suggestions, The computer's not really going to be doing anything extremely intensive, I want a system that's fast and reliable and is going to last me a while, I'm heading more towards the high-end even though I probably don't need it but I don't like buying second rate stuff.

Anyway I'm probably going to grab the i7 920 OEM CPU, I've been looking at motherboards and there doesn't seem to be much choice in terms of manufacturers, I like the sound of the Foxconn Blood Rage board but looking in the overclockers shop all they have is a few asus and gigabyte boards, is there a new wave of boards about to hit town?

Any suggestions of good motherboards would be welcomed, and also PSU/Graphics card as there is so many I don't know which to choose, don't really want to spend more than £150 on the graphics card and about £200 for the motherboard, although i'll probably be inclined to spend a little more.

I also really want an SSD. People have told me 32GB isn't large enough for X64 Windows 7 and Apps, so I guess I'll have to go for a 64GB drive, dont really want to spend more than £150 on this.

Thanks guys

To be honest your really buying a powerful machine considering its not used for anything extensive. Before your question can be answered we will all need to know what you do on the Pc. Do you game, rip dvds etc.

Well imo the i7 920 is the cpu to get at the momment so I would settle on a 1366 set up.

I think people have very good results with the top end foxconn stuff, but due to the loss of several top board makers over the last few years yes is starting to become limiting in choices. That said the boards from Gigabyte and Asus seem to be great, pick one that matches your budget.

Graphics wise pick up a Ati 4890, should fall well under 150.

Dissagree with the GPU, the 5770 is 120 atm and is a very respectful performer :)

I use my machine for programming, watching/ ripping films, wireless audio streaming, TV, some gaming, etc. Never the less I still want a relatively high end system, for speed and reliability.

I was heading for the 920 CPU but a few people have mentioned going the P55 way, so I'm not sure at the minute, need some more advice.

I'm just out of safety zone with the current motherboard manufacturers, as I've had a few bad experiences with Gigabyte boards, although I know they are, as well as ASUS highly recommended. I just would have preferred to get a board from a manufacturer I've had a good experience with previously, eg. EVGA, DFI, Foxconn

Sounds to me like you would really benefit from getting the I7 cpu over the I5. The i5 is the better choice for pure gaming, as the hyperthreading on the I7 makes it perform slower :S. However for programming and ripping the I7 is a true beast !

OK thanks, so you're saying the i7 is probably better for multitasking? If so that's definitely the right choice for me.

For the things you want from the machine its a deffinate yes from me. not only are you getting the performance you desire but also its a future proof machine. The 1366 sockets are the future for now ( untill the 6 core cpu's but dont worry about them ), so expect CPUs to come out for this socket :P

Why do people always over look the OCZ modxstream PSUs there modular and are still very good PSUs and a lot cheaper than corsair if your on a budget.

This, really. I'm running a 600W ModXStream on my sigged rig, with no intention of crossfiring in the future (at least not until I upgrade my motherboard - there's just not enough room!) I can't imagine why I'd need more. Plus in my opinion, they're better looking than the corsairs.

Well you need to take into consideration of cost. yes the i7 has hyperthreading but the i5 still has 4 cores, thats probably more than most programs will use and woudl be more than capable for everything he has listed. However teh big difference is that the i7 is probably 15% faster than the i5 mainly due to HT and triple channel memory. But in terms of value to performance the i5 is definately better since its almost as fast the i7 and the memory is way cheaper. I think the i5 would be more than ample for his needs and besides if he wants more cpu power there are 1156 socket i7s to upgrade to in future.

Cheers for all the advice guys I've purchased the CPU (i7), CPU Fan, Ram and Graphics card.

Just need to decide on motherboard and SSD, I've also got to get a case, I was considering the antec 300, would this case have sufficient space for my build?

And I'll have a look in to the OCZ PSU's :)

Thanks again for the help :)
