Hi guys - long time lurker (specifically the general section!), first post!

I figured it was about time I updated my (now ancient) PC... i7-920, 12GB ram, ATI 6970, Samsung 840 Pro 512GB. This is going to do everything from gaming, video rendering and running virtual machines for programming.

Here's what I'm going for so far. This is going to go into a Corsair 750D (already got).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5960X Extreme 3.00GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75960X) £799.99
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 980Ti "Reference Design" 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GTX980TI-6GD5) £599.99
1 x Asus X99-E WS Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 EATX Workstation Motherboard £419.99
1 x Intel 750 Series 400GB PCIe 3.0 X4 HHHL Adaptor NVMe Solid State Drive (SSDPEDMW400G4ES) £319.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C14 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (CMK32GX4M4A2400C14) £299.99
1 x Corsair HX1000i Full Modular Digital Power Supply (CP-9020074-UK) £171.95
Total : £2,624.50 (includes shipping : £10.50 Ex.VAT).

The plan is to double up the ram to 64GB in a couple of months, likewise with a 2nd 980ti.

What'cha think?

I don't know much about SSD's, but I'm sure you could get something bigger, faster and cheaper than that one, but someone more in the know can verify that.

Overspending on the power supply - I'd be picking one from a better OEM. My choice here would be something from EVGA, Superflower or Seasonic. Antec's platinum range are also worth a look. If you're planning on a second GPU I'd also be looking at a little more headroom really.

That is a very quick and expensive SSD - will you get the benefit from it enough to warrant the price or would a larger drive be better?

I would also strongly recommend a GTX980ti with a non reference cooler - reports are coming in that the stock cooler isn't as quiet as it really should be.

Thanks everyone!

Didn't know SuperFlower was the preferred OEM.. sounded a bit dodgy when I first came across it, so ignored that and EVGA (made by SF).

I'm going with a EVGA Supernova 1000W P2 Platinum simply because there's enough headroom in the wattage that the PSU isn't going to be flat out all the time (hopefully last longer!). That and EVGA do individually braided cables as an add-on :)

The 750 was a bit of a pipedream, but I like its ability to handle high queue depths well, which you need when running lots of VMs off the same disk. Going with SM951 512gb instead as its £20 cheaper, more space and performs pretty well up there with the 750.

I wasn't bothered about the stock cooler on the 980ti as it's going to be watercooled :)

All ordered now (lots of it out of stock - especially the WC stuff), but I'll be doing a build log when it all arrives!
