Hi there,

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. Feel free to move it if it is.

Hope you don't mind me getting straight to the point.

I've built pc's about 14 years ago. So i will probably need help assembling this, but i have a rough idea. (Willing to spend the time reading / learning).
My current pc is unreliable. So im going to build a new one.
I need my pc for photoshop work, rendering RAW files and gaming (High settings).
I currently use dual screens. (VGA)! - Dual screens are a must.

I bought 3 items from OC a couple of days ago...

  1. Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard
  • AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail
(£100 left over out of my savings).

I need help choosing my other items.
I can't afford to buy them all outright, so have to save / buy them when i have the funds.
I don't think il need crossfire just yet. (Negotiable).

Those items i need are:
  • PSU (I've been told to buy a gold psu, and it should be over 850w) ??
  • RAM
  • CPU Cooler + Correct Paste? (Prefer to stay AIR cooling - negotiable).
  • SSD x1. (Just for the OS).
  • HDD x1. (Think id like to go 10,000rpm).
  • Case (Think il just choose this myself, although i keep looking at the Cosmos II).
  • Screens (Need to buy 2 monitors).
Build time - As i said, as of when i get paid. So every month i should be able to spend about £350. Not in any rush to build the system, but don't want the warranty's to run out before i finish! lol

EDIT: Forgot to mention. Audio. I will be using a 200W+ amp + Warfdale speakers. (Stack system, basically).

I also already have a Razer Mamba 2012 mouse. Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset. Darth Vadar Toy that doesn't give much help.

Don't think im missing anything, and again, sorry for being so to the point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary.

Hey guys,

Thanks for replying :) And thanks ExRayTed for the reassurance about getting to the point :)

Ok, so...

2 x Asus VE247H 24" Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor - Black £137.99 (£275.98)
Must admit, 2 of those i think would be perfect. Curious, What's the difference between those and the Dell Ultrasharp screens?

1 x Antec High Current Pro 750W Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £129.95
If i were to get this one, would it run 2 GFX cards when the time comes? Also what's the chances id need to upgrade any time soon? I was thinking about getting something where i wouldn't need to upgrade for a couple of years at least. And it would handle anything i throw at it.

1 x Toshiba 3TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA300) HDD £89.99
3TB for that price! Oh my! Thinking back to the 3 n a half inch floppys, that just blows me away! lol! Thanks :)

1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £83.99
This seems good. Does an SSD run differently to a normal HDD? I assume i can just install Win7 via a USB stick the same way i would with a normal hdd?

1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £59.99
1600mhz... I thought that getting 2400mhz would be better?

1 x Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E CPU Cooler £57.98
Would this be good for overclocking my cpu?

--------------

1 x Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Midnight Grey
As mentioned above. What's the difference between these Dell screens and the ones stated by RJC?

Also, what type of cooler paste should i get for the processor? May sound daft to you guys, but i didn't realize that there was so many! Also... Screwdrivers... Any on OC you'd recommend for me for this build?

Thanks again,
Gary.

Order placed for the tower (CM Storm Trooper). Although im wishing i had put another order in to save on postage costs! lol!

Oh well, hopefully il get the case tomorrow :)

Also to add,
My old system was a AMD 3200+ (2Ghz), 3gb DDR Ram... very basic pc! My current pc isn't much better! I use my PC every day, so this means a lot to me :)

Thanks again

EDIT: I bought the window'd version :)

Ok, hi again guys,

So iv bought the following...
- Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator x6 Heat
- 860W Corsair AX860 Full Modular, 80

But im curious, iv been looking at "Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit" (Link: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-125-KS ). But...

Will the CPU Cooler clearance be enough for the RAM to fit in? Can't seem to find the correct information anywhere, so asking here.

Thanks,
Gaz

Annnnnd im back! Yes im still yet to start my build, yes it's all still in boxes lol... So...

Trying to decide out of 3 sets of RAM which i should get to go with my build... Ideas / feedback always welcome from you guys :)

1) Avexir Core Red Series 16GB 2133MHz Dual Channel
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-056-AR

2) TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB 2133MHz Dual Channel
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-038-TG&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=2429

3) HyperX FURY 16GB 1866 MHz CL10

out of curosity how much did u pay for the 7970 matrix platinium.

asking as that was the most expensive 7970s on market. maybe worth returning and buying something better/ more value for money depending on how much u paid

I paid £219.99. From OCUK. It's still in its box...

get the kingston (3) amd systems don't benefit from faster ram. so the cheapest ram will do just fine

ps: linking to the rainforest is a big no-no lol

Apparently its better for overclocking... which i might do (probably will). So... if i buy the faster speed ram now, it will save me investing yeat another £100 + in the future?

Also, link fixed ;)

not quite. for amd piledriver systems, 1600 is fine. it wont benefit from faster ram like intel haswell systems do.
of course that being said, if they're all the same price (which they nearly are) and if you can afford it, it wouldn't hurt to get faster ram lol

I lol'd!! haha!

Yea, faster ftw! Think il choose the Vulcan ram as the LED ram can't be turned off... apparently? Also... what is the damn height of that RAM? All i can find is 30mm?? Really? With LED's? :/

the vulcan are 30mm height, i presume the avexir are slightly more than that due to the lights.
if you're getting a big cooler, go for the vulcan cuz a) it's low profile ram, b) you wouldn't see the lights on the avexir anyway and you don't want something that can potentially interfere with the heatsink/fans. ;p

I have the Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator x6. So yea, its clearance sucks. Think il just get the vulcan.

Thanks for your help :)

And for the record, i only need to get a legit OS then im ready to start the build... nearly 1 year on... lol! :/

EDIT: Bought the Vulcan ram :)
