Hi all,

So late last night/early this morning I finished building my new gaming rig, specs as below:

i7 920 D0
Gigabyte UD5
6Gb Patriot Viper (3x2Gb)
Corsair HX 620
Antec 902 case
Asus GTX 275 Video Card
Seagate Barracude 500Gb HD
Pioneer DVD RW

I thought I'd power it on before I went to bed and make sure everything was OK......it wasn't!!

When I power the machine on, everything starts up for maybe a second or two (MB lights up, fans on, HD on, Vid Card on etc) then it imediately powers down for approx 5 seconds. It then tries to power up again for a couple of secs, then off again and gets stuck in this cycle until I switch the PSU off. The machine nevers posts and the MB shows code 88 (not sure whether this is the right error or it just shows this in the few seconds when it tries to start up). I have the machine connected to a monitor and keyboard/mouse plugged in.

I'm at work at the moment so haven't done anything else with it as yet but thought I'd post to see if anyone has any idea's of either what could be wrong or things to do to test it.

This is the first PC I've built and I'm a bit worried that I've done something wrong so any info is welcome.

Thanks

Chris

Thanks for this,

Should I clear the CMOS as well before re-starting or does the fact that I've never managed to get it to post means that the CMOS is irelevant at this stage?

Cheers

Cheers for the responses,

I've installed the memory in the white slots (1, 3 and 5) as per the MB user manual. I'll be knocking off from work soon so can go home and put your suggestions to use :D

Thanks

OK I've tried the following so far with no joy,

  1. cleared CMOS and restarted
  2. disconnected everything apart from 2 MB power cables and 2 Vid card power cables, then restarted
  3. removed MB from case, connected 2 MB power cables and 2 Vid card power cables, then restarted

There has been no change so I'll try running with 1 stick of RAM next before I look at removing the CPU fan and re-seating with new thermal paste.

Cheers

1 stick of RAM didn't make any difference :(

Yes it has an 8pin cpu power connector as well as the 24 pin, they are both connected along with the 2 PCI power connectors on the vid card.

I'm going to check the hsf now as it's the last thing I can think of to look at....

edit: Should I try removing the CMOS battery first as you suggest or better to look at the hsf first?

How will I know if the MB posts without the vid card being hooked upto a monitor? I don't have a speaker connected to listen for beeps so all I have is the lcd code display on the board

OK so I've removed, cleaned and re-seated the hsf and restarted with only 1 stick of RAM and no vid card as suggested.....still the same :(

Still just powers on for 1 sec and then off again and just cycles this behaviour until I kill the power.

Does this mean my MB has had it?

I've tried each stick separately and in various slots and still no joy. I've also let it attempt to start 5 times on each go.

I'm running out of things to try now :( Has anyone got any other idea's?

Cheers

Just tried with a different PSU, 1 stick of RAM, no vid card, reseated CPU cooler etc as before and still the same issue. I've ruled our PSU, RAM, Vid Card, hsf so I can only think the MB has had it :(

Gutted!!!

I've contacted Overclockers to arrange RMA.....hopefully it won't take too long although they've said there going to email me and I've just realised they've got my email address wrong :(

Guess I'll have to wait until Monday now unless anyone on here can advise what the process is for RMAing a MB?

Thanks to everyone for there help and suggestions in trying to get my issue resolved :D

Cheers
