Hi All,

I've had my current Pc for nearly 10 yrs now, and what a sad day it is. I am retiring the old girl. She is so slow to boot up into Windows 7 now, I have to leave it for 30mins before going anywhere near!

I am looking to have you nice people Spec me a Pc which will last me another 10 years!

Ideally I would not like to spend a huge amount, but future upgradability would definitely be a consideration.

I am a big one for value for money. If I can pick stuff up second hand - even better. In terms of components I have which I can re-use, I have a 2TB HD which I would move across. I also have an Asus 6850 GPU. I don't intend to do any insane 4k gaming, so I think this suits my needs - Unless of course I could sell that on the bay, and get a newer model which is twice as good for not much money :)

I like the idea of having a small SSD for the OS. Samsung 850 Evo 250G looks ideal to me?

I'll need a new case & PSU. The Pc sits in a cupboard, so no need for fancy windows or anything. Cooling is very important as the cupboard doesn't have great ventilation.

I'm also thinking about a new monitor. 24" - 27". Again, no mental super monitor than has some mad gaming sync facility as I don't think I would use that.

Thanks a lot!

You're going to need to give us an idea of the budget you have in mind - £500? £1k?

Also, what do you use the pc for mainly and will you need Windows?

I don't really have a budget (I know that isn't helpful at all. I guess I want to spend as little as possible, while getting the best 'bang for buck' I can. Certainly no more than £500 (not including monitor).

In terms of Windows I have Windows 7 Pro atm, and it keeps telling me I have a free upgrade to windows 10, so hopefully I can just use that?

So you want to spend as little as possible and keep the 6850? Sounds like all you need is to move your current OS to a SSD tbh.

Well someone at work did suggest that, but my Mobo is a GA-965P-DS3 . The SATA can only do 3Gb/s so thought I could get a newer Mobo and pair that with a new SSD and feel the full benefit. Happy to spend the money, just want to make sure it is spent to get the biggest gains :)

I revived my old Core 2 Duo setup about 3-4 years ago with an SSD. It felt like a brand new super fast computer, and even after 2 years without running any cleaner apps it still booted up quick and felt very responsive. I only upgraded it last year as I wanted to play new games.

SSD FTW.

You'll likely be suprised how much life a SSD will breathe into your current PC. Give it a go. A 250 GB SSD won't break the bank and will give you a performance boost, even on an older motherboard with slower SATA. You can always re-use the SSD in a new PC build if you decide you still want to upgrade.

So I went out and bought a Samsung 850 Evo. Did a fresh Windows 7 install - upgraded to Windows 10 through the free programme.

Absolutely amazed what it has done.

So much quicker to boot, more responsive, and much much quicker in general use.

Nice one. Does this mean your old PC isn't quite up for retirement just yet?

I'm hoping for another Ten years now, Haha! I do fancy another monster though....unsure whether to go 4k or not. Only connected via CAT5, so don't know whether it's possible to stream 4k over CAT 5?

I hope you gave it a spring clean whilst you had the case out the cupboard ;)

Hahah. You should have seen the Tuniq tower! Absolutely disgraceful!
