Hey all,

Recently built a new gaming PC;

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory
Storage: Sabrent Rocket 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB Red Devil Video Card
Case: NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor: AOC Q3279VWFD8 31.5" 2560x1440 75 Hz Monitor

I was happily gaming away when suddenly it powered off. Now when I power it on all I see is "No signal" on my monitor.

Things I have tried;
Checked all connections - No change
Alternate PSU - No change
Alt monitor - No change
Removed GPU and tried combining previous steps - No change
Removed a RAM module - No change

Any advice on what to try next would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

What was the alternate PSU you tried?

Have you tried another GPU? Also you said you removed a RAM module, did you replace that one and removed the other to test?

Still could be a lot of things, need more information to narrow it down.

I tried an old 650W Corsair Pro.
Haven't tried a new GPU but when I removed it and connected to the HDMI slot on the mobo I was getting the same result.
I tried with no RAM at all to see what would happen, nothing. Then I tried one stick in every slot, no change.

a pain in the arse, but build it as a test bench to ensure that you haven't shorted something

Can shorts just happen even if nothing is changed/moved?

Thanks.

Yes that's right, there is no internal GPU in CPU so you need an external one.

That seems ok for now.

I'd say if you've been using the machine for a few weeks this is unlikely to happen but cannot be ruled out.

Can you try the 5700XT in another machine? This is looking to be primarily the issue, but it would be good to get a second machine to confirm it.

I don't have another working set up but I did try an old 570 GPU in it and it seems to be working now. Does this mean my 5700 XT is dud? :( Was only playing Path of Exile as well, barely pushed 65 degrees...

Now you know everything else works, sans video card, the last thing I would do is put the 5700XT back in. If the machine is again dead then it's safe to say that the 5700XT died so feel free to RMA.

try your 5700xt in a freinds pc if that wont display then it confirms the 5700xt is dead, if bought recently you'll be able to return to the retailer for a replacment or a refund, you say the card was sitting around 65 degrees, thats proberly the core, the vrm's and gddr6 on those cards do run hot so it could be a faliure of one or both of thease components, only testing the card in another pc will confirm if its dead.

just looked now and its a read devil card man thats really bad luck as they are cherry picked cards :(

Unfortunately all my friends & family use consoles/laptops. Will just have to try returning it and hope for the best.

Hopefully the next one works! :p

Just to confirm, as I had the system up and running, playing games etc when it happened, it's unlikely there's any issues with the build right? Would hate to get another card and have the same thing happen.

Other than testing it in someone elses system is there anything else I could check to make sure everything set up correctly? Using my old GPU I now have access to the BIOS if that helps.

Thanks.

the only thing i would look at would be the psu, check it can output the correct amps for the devil card, just looked on powercolors website and for the 5700xt red devil varant it sugests a 700watt psu, looking at your spec you have a 650watt unit, not sure but the lower wattage could've damaged the card, if you do opt for a replacment i'd look at a 700w psu just for peace of mind

scroll down near the bottom and click specficatons page in this section near the bottom it has psu requiments.

other than the above your system spec seems pretty solid to be fair, just have a look at the psu

Damn I didn't notice that, PC part picker gave me an estimate of around 420w so just assumed it was fine. Nice catch, I'll look into a 750W PSU just to rule that out.

Thanks.

most online power calculators miss the fact that modern day parts have boost algoryhms, it may have said 420w was ok but forgot to take into account the extra 300-400mhz cpu boost plus the exta boost clocks for the gpu eg 1690mhz - 2010mhz for the devil card is a big jump in power needed.

just did a rought calculation for your build but taking into acound the boost clocks and voltages for the cpu and gpu and the system pulled 580w and sugests a 632w minimum, yes you have a 650w unit but it dosnt leave a lot left if you oc, rule of thumb is to have around 100w extra capacity for your psu, thats what i do anyway

Update just in case I'm overlooking anything.

Couldn't get a Red Devil replacement for another week due to stock issues so I've opted for the Sapphire Nitro+ instead. This should also allow me to avoid replacing my PSU :)
