New build - no VGA output?

I've just transferred a system from a server rack case into a standard desktop case. The motherboard is an ASRock 4Core1333-FullHD which has onboard video with 2 x outputs, one DVI and one VGA for dual monitor setups - my monitor is currently under repair so I'm having to use a backup which only has VGA input. Unfortunately, connecting the monitor to the machine via VGA cable doesn't seem to show any output... the monitor just shows 'no signal'. i'd use DVI if I could, in fact I even have a DVI to VGA dongle from an old graphics card but it doesn't quite seem to fit the DVI port on this motherboard (i realise people now call it D-Sub and DVI-D but I don't know what the difference is!)...

It seems as if the motherboard is set to only output via VGA and nowhere in the manual does it mention how to get it to switch to the VGA output as default...any ideas?


UPDATE: The plot thickens....in my haste to get the new machine up and running, I neglected to notice that it wasn't even beeping when powering up.... all lights are on, hard drives are spinning up, fans are whirring.......nobody's home..... I'll open her up and triple-check everything but....any preliminary suggestions?

I suggest finding a DVI screen to plug into it in cause it's defaulting to that output, even drag the box to a tech shop to test it. Also check if the pc speaker is connected to the motherboard. If you can't get a DVI then try to throw in another vid card and see if it defaults to using that one and try to get things sorted there.
 
So is it not unheard of to have a motherboard fail to beep on startup? There are no lights on the motherboard but the wireless lan card I have lights up so I assume it's getting juice thru the mobo? The PSU was my first thought - the mobo has a 20-pin socket and a 4-pin 12V, whereas the PSU (from OC) came with a 24-pin mobo connector and a 4-pin 12V so I thought I may have mixed them up somewhere, but I broke the 4-pin off the 24-pin and it didn't fit in the other socket.................if that makes any sense!!


UPDATE: Please forgive my rambling.... Ok, so I noticed that when I power up the system with the 20 and 4-pin power connected, it can be shut down by holding the power button, however, without the 4-pin connector connected it won't turn off unless I cut power at the PSU... does this mean that the motherboard is indeed receiving the power it needs? There's no light on it but surely power getting to my PCI cards is a sign that it's on??
