New build not powering up

I've spent most of today moving my main rig in to a matx build, keeping everything apart from the motherboard.

Plugged everything in, press power, but no post. None of the fans power up at all, the PSU is fine, that power up when plugged in, and the power light on the mobo is on.

I tried various changes of the front panel connector, no dice.
Short the pwr pins with metal, no dice.
Clear CMOS, nope.
CMOS battery out, nope.
Switched up RAM, still nothing.
Bare minimum devices connected, nada.

Dead mobo?

What a waste of 5 hours!!

Existing CPU, and even if the pins were bent, the fans would power up wouldnt they?

I now have the mobo tray out the case, both power cables connected, single stick of RAM, and cpufan connected. Power light on mobo is on, but shorting or using case power header still doesn't turn anything on.

Next thing is test my backup MATX mobo I guess.

Now I am really confused, put everything in to my back up matx board, now the fans spin up (progress!) but then spin down shortly after.

Unplugged all sata, single stick of ram, same thing again and again. Arg!

PSU was working fine this morning, and is only a year old.

Just tested the new mobo in my mining rig (using a different psu and cpu) and still no post at all, not even a fan spin, so that is definitely the motherboard that is borked.

What I don't understand is why my main gear with my working back up board isn't fully booting.

I really can't be bothered with putting everything back in to my ATX tower, it will take hours, shouldn't have bothered trying to move to matx :(

Tried back up PSU, same thing.

Could a cpu cause this?

I've tried 3 different sticks of ram, in different slots, unplugged various things, the only thing I can think of is my cpu, but why would it suddenly die for no reason?

I guess I could test my celeron in it and see...

Cheers guys, it must be the chip.

Swapped it out for my backup G1620, and that works fine, so no issues with the mobo pins.

Whilst I don't have a strap, I am cautious and discharge regularly when working with pc bits. To date I have never killed any component with static. :(

No warranty as it was bought second hand, booo!

Cheers, just fired Intel an email with all the details, fingers crossed.

Just did one final test, cpu, stick of ram, psu. Mobo power led is on, no post, at all, not the slightest bit of fan movement.

Funnily enough, a G1620 and 290x is still capable of playing Guild Wars 2, LOL! Just can't do anything with loads of other players.

For great justice!

Intel have confirmed warranty until March 2015 and asked for phone number and shipping details.

Hope they don't want the box/cooler back, I got the chip bare second hand.

Right you are!

Drop of at DHL collection point, which gets sent to them for free. They will verify the fault, and send me a new one.

Just the chip in a box! Woohoo!

Bit of faff, service point couldn't process it, but a quick call to VERY helpful chap and it was picked up this morning from my work. I thought DHL were supposed to suck? This process was brilliant.

I owe you a beer dude!

Ruddy hell, buy a second hand, bare chip 2700k for £185.

End up getting a retail boxed and sealed RMA replacement, mwahaha!

Thanks for the help guys, saved me a bucketload!
