I've finished building my dad's new PC and I turned it on for the first time today expecting to find that everything went according to plan.

I was worried to find that nothing appeared on the monitor and I left the system on for two or three minutes. No change. I've checked the monitor is plugged into the power socket and the VGA cable is plugged into the graphics card's VGA socket. The monitor's standby light (amber) stays on.

The graphics card is a GeForce 8600 GT and from what I can see is seated in the PCI Express slot correctly and requires no power directly from the PSU. If somebody could help i'd be very grateful :(

do u get any beeps from the mobo at all?

what parts new all of it?

have you tested it with any gfcard

have you check everything is in the right place cpu fitted properly and power leads going to the right places

I don't get any beeps at all.

All of the parts, apart from the sound card, are brand new.

I've only tested it with this graphics card. Will try another.

CPU is seated fine with stock heatsink and power connections look ok.

The 4 pin 12v from the PSU is plugged into the motherboard?

The motherboard is an Asus P5K Premium and I've used the 24 pin power connector.

No nothing is plugged in there. I've noticed on my pc that my stock cooler has a power plug that goes into a socket around that upper area on the motherboard. This quad core cooler does not have one.

Just reseated the graphics card and still nothing.

Ok great i've plugged in the a 4 pin connector from the PSU into that socket and the image has come on the monitor. When loading up the BIOS screen it comes up with this:

"Unknown CPU detected, updaing BIOS is required to unleash its full power!
No IDE Master HDD detected!
Chassis Intruded!
Fatal error....system halt"

The CPU is a Q9450 2.66GHz and the motherboard supports quad cores.

I didn't put in any IDE hard drives, just two 500GB SATA drives.

I have no idea what to do now :(

I've just cleared the CMOS I think. I removed the lithium battery and fiddled with a jumper the way my mobos manual tells me to.

It now boots up differently, it doesn't show the ASUS image anymore and instead it lists the all the devices in the system I think. It then says:

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media selecting boot and press any key."

From here do I just go into the bios setup, format the hard drives and then set one of the dvd drives as the boot device with the Windows XP disc inserted?

Do you reckon I need to still update the BIOS?

I thought this would all be easy and go to plan like it did when I built my PC so sorry for all this trouble :( Thanks for your help.

Nope just when I thought things were looking up it came up with a previous message like before.

I just updated the BIOS with the newest version and backed up the old one with a floppy disk. After installing the BIOS I went into BIOS setup and set the priority boot device as the dvd-rom drive. After this I put the XP disc in and reboot the system.

Now it's auto detecting all the devices, lists them all and displays the message:

"No IDE Master H.D.D detected!
Fatal Error...System halted"

Really don't know where to go from here.

It's not letting me into the BIOS setup at all even if I press the delete key.

Obviously not that then, look at the first bios screen above where you get the error message, what is it listing as your first IDE master ?

It says exactly this:

"Auto-Detecting SATA 1...ATAPI CD-Rom
Auto-Detecting SATA 3...IDE Hard Disk
Auto-Detecting SATA 2...ATAPI CD-Rom
Auto-Detecting SATA 4...IDE Hard Disk

SATA 1: Sony DVD-Rom DDU1615S EYN1
Ultra DMA Mode-5
SATA 3: Samsung HD502IJ 1AA01109
Ultra DMA Mode-5, S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK
SATA 2: ATAPI DVD A DH20A1S UX14
Ultra DMA Mode-5
SATA 4: Samsung HD502IJ 1AA01109
Ultra DMA Mode-5, S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK

Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage...
00 USB Mass Storage Devices Found and Configured

No IDE Master H.D.D. Detected!
Chassis Intruded!
Fatal Error...System Halted."

I think you should also put your hard disk in sata slot 1, i heard that somewhere.

Just made one of my hard disks SATA 1 and it boots slightly differently now. The "No IDE Hard Disk detected" has gone and it just displays:

"Chassis intruded!
Fatal Error...System Halted."

When I turn the computer on it beeps once then when I hit the delete key to go into BIOS setup it beeps again (once) and displays the messages.

Would it help if I cleared the CMOS again?

Phew got things sorted. Thanks for everyones help. I solved it by removing a stick of memory and it allowed me into BIOS setup and boot from the XP disc. If I put the stick of RAM I took out back in will it affect XP in any way as i'm changing a component?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. You helped me a lot with your advice and my dad's new PC is working brilliantly right now.

Thanks guys.
