Hi all,

Just got my bonus and I've got £1200 for a new PC.

Trying to decide whether to buy now or wait until November / Xmas as my current pc doesn't struggle with anything. Usage will be mostly games but will also used for work - I don't do foldingor anything fancy though

Current spec is :
AMD 3500 clocked to 4000
Nvidea 7900 GTO
2 Gig Ram
250 gig sata hard drive (not 7200 rpm)

I won't be needing a monitor, keyboard, mouse or speakers (I've got a Dell 2407) although I'm tempted by one of those Gaming keyboards but not sure how much better it'll be than my current MS Wireless 6000 kb.

So what do you guys advise - wait and get a 2nd gen DX card etc ? (assuming they actually ship this year)

Any advice gratefully received - ps anyone around the west of London fancy putting the mb / case together for me ? (for a few pennies of cause <g>)

Wait till november for geforce 9 series 100% defo...

Gaming keyboard here is a good review of razors latest attempt:

I have a logitech g15! which is if not better in my opinion, both about the same price too, well worth the dosh!

If your system doest struggle dont upgrade it...

or in other words...

if it aint broke, dont fix it....

Matt.

Your system is not a million miles from mine. I'm also planning on a new system rather than upgrading. You say it doesnt struggle with anything (same here) and thats why i've decided to wait. I'll spend the same amount of money but, the longer i wait, the better i will be able to buy. If its not struggling just it enjoy for now, knowing that you can buy all new whenever you need to :D

Very much agree with you.

I'm going to wait for Vista SP1 and the next gen of Graphics cards to turn up. I don't think there will be anything that my system can't cope with this year. Fair enough, I may have to turn the detail setting down a notch, but I can live with that.

Though I accept, that's it's very much up to the individual and as already pointed out, processor / memory prices are quite attractive at the moment.

Processor prices will only go down. Ram goes all over the place. I was going to buy some 8500+ black dragon ram at 99 quid. Its now like 115. But they could go down again i gues. Id wait for processor though also. When new ones coming out prices will drop further. If your waiting for the graphics card. You might as well wait for all of it to.

I was going to build whats in my sig in september. But i might hold off now.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Think I'll hold off a bit longer and take the plunge when the next gen arrives.

Either that or pick up a system when (if) any decent games hip this year.

Personally I think now isn't too bad a time to buy. Intel slashed their prices a couple of weeks ago, and DDR2 prices seem to be starting to creep back up again if anything. E.g. the OcUK 4gig PC5300 kit has gone up from £70 (!) to £105 since I made this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17758565&highlight=%A3250

Yep, RAM prices could fall back down again after the rise but I got burned in the past expecting that to happen with DDR. As a general rule historically it's pretty rare for the "standard configuration" of RAM at any given time (currently 2gig... 1gig a few years ago.... 512meg a couple years before that etc ) to drop below £60. Due to price fixing and such I don't think we are going to see DDR2 dropping much below it's current price, especially with the inevitable shift to DDR3 production on the horizon. But who knows.

As mentioned however, gfx cards are a different kettle of fish. Depending on what you use your PC for it might be worth building a quad-core setup and keeping your 7900GTO for a few months.

Personally I would by the main system; mobo, processor, RAM, HDD, case, PSU etc now and stick with your current graphics card. Then upgrade that to DX10 this time next year.

Would really have to upgrade the graphics card at the same tiem as I'm passing the old box to my daughter - her current rig is AGP based so no matter how I play it I'd need a new card for one of the boxes.

As for usage - mostly mmorgs - currently back playing Everquest 2. Betaed Vanguard and LOTR but felt Vanguard wasn't ready for release and LOTR hasn't got enough content / challenge yet.

I also play FPS games but nothing much on the market appeals atm.
