Hi all,
A mate has asked me to build a new PC for him. He has a budget of £1000, although he can stretch to £1200 if needed. He wants the money to go as far as possible so it's not all going to be top-end gear.
CPU-Intel Q6600 or E8400. I was suggesting Q6600 as I hadn't realised the new chips were out. Less cores but seem faster and either way he can upgrade later if needed.
Motherboard-Asus P5K-E WiFI P35 DDR2-Seems to be a pretty good compromise on price, clockability, and features. The X38 and X48 boards are looking far too expensive at the moment, as is DDR3.
Memory-2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC 6400-Seems very overclockable and reasonably priced. He's not going to be running a 64-bit system so no real need to go for more than 2GB.
GFX-BFG GeForce 8800GTS 512MB 675MHz Core, 1940MHz GDDR3-Again, reasonably priced, same no. of stream processors as the GTX and Ultra and, if I have it right, not that much slower, if at all.
CPU Cooler-Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or Tuniq Tower 120-Either of these seem to be raved about. Any fitment issues with particular boards e.g. capacitors getting in the way?
That's the main bits. The remainder isn't too hard to sort out. With the other bits on the list that leaves around £350-£550 for case, PSU and quite possibly a new monitor. Any suggestions appreciated.
Jon
