Hi,

ok so my current desktop is a Advent centurion CDP1301 which i bought a few years ago, needless to say this is getting a little old now and whilst it manages with the games i am using at the moment (fallout NV, Skyrim etc) it isnt on high settings on these and will randomly crap out on me.

I thought about building a new computer as it is something I've wanted to do for a while but the case for this computer is massive so i was wondering if i would be better replacing MoBo, CPU, GPU and PSU or just building a new one.

I'm new to the building side of computers so sorry if im going on a bit.

Here are The Centurions Specs

AMD Phenom II X2 545 (3.0GHz)
Foxconn A7VMX-K AMD 780V + SB700
4GB DDR2 (2 memory slots. Max 4GB)
500GB SATA
CD Drive DVD±RW
ATI Radeon HD4650 1GB
Realtek ALC662 High Definition

I was thinking of this for the motherboard

Asus Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

is this overkill for the price or ok??

Also my budget isn't huge as i start University in about 2 weeks ;)

Any help would be appreciated,

Many Thanks,

Hi, what is the overall budget, do you have all other peripherals, screen, keyboard, mouse...it seems you can re use your hdd but i wouldnt recommend using much else. Let us know the budget and we will give you a spec.

Hi, my overall budget is about £600 max but I will struggle to buy it all in one go, I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to keep a lot. :(

Thanks

In that case i would go MOBO+CPU+RAM then either GPU or SSD.

If the PSU isnt up to it then get that before the GPU this one should do it.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-500CXUKV2) £49.99
Total : £60.49 (includes shipping : £8.75).

Bare in mind that if you buy in stages the shipping will push up the price.

I don't think the PSU is anything special, this is why I thought a complete rebuild would be the only way but I just can't pull that amount of cash. I have an OS.

With the MoBo would I be able to fit one that supports Sli/XFire and gives me room to add more ram, bigger cards etc or will that not work??

I have a crosshair V, my opinion is that is very cool, but unnecessary. It has some really nice gizmos on board, but I certainly wouldn't pay full whack for one especially given that AMD don't really have a high end cpu to compliment such a high end board (i got mine cheap on the bay, about £100 IIRC).

Also, seeing as your a student, in pretty sure that money could be put to much better use in other components

However, if you really want one, theres supposed to be a new refresh/revision of it due soon...

Ok thanks, sorry I'm asking loads of questions just very new to building computers. So I'd be better doing MoBo, CPU & RAM first then adding the rest when available. As for CPU are Intel or Amd better for gaming? Again sorry for all the questions

Just been perusing the overclockers shop and spotted the overclocked bundles, would getting one of these be a smart move considering its MoBo, CPU & RAM??

They are good if you have no clue about computers and want something is ready to go, but expect to pay more than if you buy everything separately.
