Hi looking for some views on me dilemma which way to go ect .
Have a i5 750 2,67 ghz , It started life as an HP since then have added extra HD"s . A 1200 antec case , 750W PSU , 560 ti gainward 2gb GPU . and 8GB of 1333mhz ram .
However its uses have moved on from farmville and browsing ect and the speed may be lacking a little at high end gaming , Me son has just started to learn the benefits of movie maker and expect him to progress as time goes by from cartoon stick men !
Unfortunately being a cheap HP indio motherboard it will not overclock or go beyond 2.67 ghz .
Is it worth a new 1156 socket motherboard with a OEM W7 prehaps some faster ram and say water cooler kit ? all I could prob get for £300 .
Alternatively going for new build say 1155 i7 ect with a budget of around £500 holding off a little longer for .
How much useful life would the first idea give me , would It on top the game for a couple more years and that budget would leave me equipped with faster ram and watercooling which at least can me migrated in future .
Any thoughts , suppose it long as it is short , just wondering how you would go from with it ?
many thanks

Honestly thats still a great looking PC you have there, so either leave it as it is and wait for the next stuff from Intel.

Or as you have alluded to wanting to O/C the CPU then a straight change of motherboard is all you need,

Changing the RAM for faster rated stuff isnt needed, watercooling can help with the noise and temps if overclocking, a H60/H80/Antec620 etc will be a simple option.

cheers for reply , just think it needs just a little more umph ! when gaming can struggle a little at times on dirt 3 and F1 2010 after while . A little bit more speed im thinking should future proof it for a couple more years , unfortunately with the motherboard I have reached its ceiling . Yes overclocking was in the thought process and small overclock to the 3ghz league will keep it the edge . So thinking a £200 investment in new mobo , and unfortunately another version of W7 will further its lifespan and put of the thought of a new build for a couple of years . I understand the i5 750 lynnfield is still a great chip .
cheers .

for £300, you can certainly get a good 2500K + Z68 setup. I'm surprised you are struggling with a i5 750 quad. The motherboard must suck big time. If you can't get any more out of the CPU, then maybe it's time for a change.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £161.99
1 x Asus P8Z68-V Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £129.98
Total : £303.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

I wouldn't spend on a dead socket though, especially if it involves another Win 7 oem. I'd try to get as much as possible from the CPU, these should overclock easily past 3GHz, with a decent air cooler (akasa Venom, that kind of thing). If not possible, then sell it and get a 2500K motherboard + CPU + Win 7.

He should in no way waste £300 on that!! not when Socket2011 is 6 months away and Ivybridge is coming then too.

And then he cant afford Win7 either

Your both right with your different points of view , Thats why I have this dilemma .
on one hand its a shame to waste a perfectly good i5 chip , cause a motherboard sucks .
£300 quid is a waist in one way but so is making a £150 chip redundant also .
One the over hand I can put that money aside for new build i7 2600k , 1155 MB , and a OEM W7 for approx £460 .
Prehaps I could sell the indio MB , i5 and the OEM W7 all together as a bundle to get some me money back ? any ideas on what I could look to reasonably achieve on that ?

Just do what I said.

Buy a new P55 board, and wait for the next gen (Ivybridge and Sandybridge-E)

All other options are retarded.

Thats is the cheaper option of all , time I can Overclock it the difference will be negligible to the other options . Another benefit I suppose these boards might drop a little further soon with this ivybridge on the horizon as 1156 drops down the pecking order .
cheers
