Hello. Im upgrading my PC to the new gen hardware, is this a good mobo or could i get a better one for my money. Also is that memory any good, it appears to be very cheap, is there scope to overclock?

Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail

XFX Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

OCZ Gold 6GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 Low-Voltage Triple Channel Kit (3 X 2GB) (OCZ3G1333LV6GK) OCZ Gold 6GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 Low-Voltage Triple

Does anybody have any feedback for me on this?

Much appreciated

Matthew

I don't honestly know all that much about AMD's offerings these days, but that RAM is a pretty good deal.

The guys at OCUK overclocked that ram and it did pretty darn well! The results can be see here:

Hopefully you'll get lucky and have a successful time unlocking that 4th core too!

Oh just remembered that AM3s are dual channel, so whether or not you want to put in that 3rd stick of RAM is up to you

I would go for dual channel unless you fancy experimenting with cherry-picking the best 2 sticks or seeing what including the 3rd stick does, I have the UD5P motherboard, and if it is anything to go by yours should be a happy overclocker!

Are you planning to run stock cooler or us an aftermarket? My Freezer 64 Pro idles at ~26C and the hottest it has gotten is to 43C under Prime95 torture testing (not finished clocking yet ;))

Warning! That RAM will NOT work with a Phenom II. That RAM is DDR3 Tri-channel, and AM3 Phenom II's only work with DDR3 Dual Channel. DDR3 Tri-channel is for i7 platforms only.

Why? Whats the difference? I don't think that the ram sticks themselves are any different, its just that instead of coming in a pack of 2 its in a pack of 3. If he decides to put 2 sticks in each channel they will run in dual channel mode, if he puts all 3 sticks in they will run in single channel mode.

Thats what I've been led to believe anyways. I could be wrong...

Sounds right to me.

PII works best with 2 sticks

Ahh i see, no tri channel on AMD. Ok. If i bought the Ocz, would it work ok in dual channel? Will it run slow because its designed for the i7? The Viper memory is too expensive for me at 155 quid, i see there is some corsair there for 80 quid, but has a few dodgy reviews. What would everyone suggest, the Ocz in dual, or the corsair? or anything else im not aware of?

Thanks, i just want to get my setup correct before i buy the wrong stuff

Cheers

Personally I would get a Dual Channel DDR3 kit, it's less money and you aren't going to have any ambiguety. Some tri-channel packs will run as dual channel with just 2 cards, but its probably not worth the money to try it having thought about it some.

OCZ Platinum 2x2GB DDR3 Dual Channel works great here, clocks really happily :D
