New build PC - Win 7 question

I always have two PC's on the go... I have an admin PC and a slightly higher spec games PC (curently both are skt939), both where on XP (yup - it was old n good!). I bought 2 copies of Win 7 Home Premium for both my home PC's 18 months(ish) ago.

I upgraded 1 of my pc's (my games PC) straight away, from XP to Win7 64 to support 4gb ram, on my skt 939 system and left the other copy on the shelf, unused (waiting for upgrade time).

That time has come! The motherboard on my gaming PC has died... It would appear that; Gone are the old days where you upgraded (any part or all of) your pc and fish out your OS and reinstalled it, time and time again!!

So my Win7x64 games system is due a total upgrade... A big step for me, I'm going Intel - 1155 and SSD - because I'm changing Motherboard/CPU/SSD - I've read that my current Win7x64 registration will not be happy, reinstalling the same copy from my skt 939 on my new upgraded games system.

Question 1; Is this the case? If so... I have the second unused box of Win7 to install from!

That leaves me with a 1Tb HDD (from the dead motherboard gaming PC) with an image for a skt939 AN8 motherboard to re-use on my surviving A8N that will inherit the Ram and CPU from my dead gaming mobo....

Normally I'd wipe the HDD and put the system together and load the OS... but the registration seems to prohibit this - is my best bet is a driver cleaner...

Any thoughts welcome...

Question 2; Although a 'fresh' install is prefered, is there any reason why the Win7 64 system on the 1TB cannot be configured with the correct drivers to run my AN8?

if you got retail versions not OEM you can swap out any bits you like, the OEM versions lock to the mobo chipset so you should be ok doing a fresh install on the old system with your used key.

Give it a shot first before you start with driver cleaning, MS used to offer a service where you could unlock OEM keys when swapping hardware for a nominal fee but that may have been just to partner companies.

1. Try a fresh install there always better and it should work ok.

2. bash the 1TB drive in if it doesnt play, the retail versions are ok at picking up hardware changes but again its not going to work if your mobo is a different chipset.

3. keep the admin pc on XP its still a viable OS.

good luck.

PS if your worried about damaging the installs on the 1TB drive try the admin pc with your new shiny SSD drive and old key, if it works and authenticates flatten the 1TB and off you go

...that's the 'gold' info I was looking for :p cheers. I bought two boxes of Home Premium (MS Windows 7 Home Prem Retail) back in 2010 and only loaded the one copy...

I'd much prefer a clean install on both systems... I was just scavenging around to make the best of what I had - IF Microsoft wouldn't let me re-install.

Happy Days - Cheers Gav_881

Yu could ring microsoft and ask if they could deactivate the key my friend did that with one of his pc's similar thing happened although it ws the cu and he replaced everything. But microsoft should be able to deactivate it and thdn you can use it again
